1989 Fl400
« on: April 20, 2014, 01:03:28 PM »
Bought a Pilot FL400, rode it 2 hours and the water pump bearing went out and caused the engine to seize.  Have metal in the case and need a lower rebuild including crankshaft replacement.  I am looking at 2k in cost to find a used crankshaft (how safe is that) and other parts including labor.  I also am contemplating parting the remaining motor out and going with a rotax 670 upgrade with new mounts, radiator etc..
Would like to keep the stock engine but need a reliable crankshaft..
Advice from the ones that have been here before would be a great help...

The water pump bearing caused damage to the crank? Did it come apart and bust through the cases or something? Can you post pics? I may be interested in the old engine parts if you decide to go the rotax route... If you ride sand, it would be a welcomed upgrade... If you trail ride, it may be a bit much power....

No cases I think are good. The motor got hot. The crankshaft is out and still connected to the rod it just won't turn. Like the rod is locked in place in between the crankshaft..

I've boiled it down to these Honda part numbers
91003-HE0-003 bearing
91032-HE0-005 bearing
91033-HE0-005 bearing
91203-HE0-003 oil seal
13350-HE0-000 weight
11191-HE0-P00 gasket
11395-HE0-P00R cover gasket

Now all I need to do is find them!
Any ideas??????

The 2 crank bearings are out there... Replacements have been found and are currently being sold.... The oil seal is nothing special either... Do a search for the size and you will find many options... The small end bearing is available with a new piston... The weight, well, good luck with that... I have heard of people running without them, but never tried it so I cant comment.... There are also complete gasket kits available as well... Try to get Athena... Cometic is not on par with Athena....

We have the mains, the rod, seals and gaskets. If looking at replacing the weight because Honda lists that as how to replace the bearing, people have replaced the just the bearing on the TRX250R. It should be the same on the Pilot.

Yes... If it's just the bearing, I have replaced that before.... It's easy to press off the gear, and the bearing is readily available from many bearing suppliers... The tricky part is getting the gear pressed back on so the little pin on the weight lines back up with the little hole in the gear. It's very important to get that part right because it is what times your balancer with your crank..
