hello my son and i have recently restored an 82 fl250 and we are having running issues .the machine will not rev up and spits fuel back from the carb the engine is a fresh rebuild with a carb overhaul we have done lots to it with no success here's a list
new fuel pump
cleaned out exhaust ,100 percent sure its not plugged
new coil and wire new plug
new fuel filter
rebuilt wiring harness
new magneto
everything is new except the cdi and flywheel
i have tried gravity feeding fuel ,restricting fuel ,restricting air
i even hooked a 2 cycle timing light on it and made a mark at tdc but when i started it the mark lights on the bottom of the engine  not at the top where i made a mark?

every one i ask says cdi's either work or don't ,they don't change timing    any advice would be great my son is dying to ride it

Try popping the flywheel off to see if the key is sheared.

thanks for replying but  the key is not sheared ,i was wondering if someone before me has put a points flywheel on it and are they different than a cdi flywheel ?

Part #'s are different so I would imagine the flywheels are not the same.  If its spitting back through the carb I would say timing or CDI.  I've had faulty CDI's on many things that were intermittent.  I don't see why these would be any different.  The best one can hope for is to have it work right or not at all.  Intermittent electrical issues are a PITA.

WHICH CARB AND WHICH PUMP? FACTORY CARB HAS TO HAVE TEE IN THE LINE. THE REPLACEMENT CARB DOES NOT. WHAT NOTCH IS THE NEEDLE SET IN. START WITH IT IN THE MIDDLE SLOT. VERIFY JETS ARE CORRECT SIZE.

so since then a new flywheel ,and cdi with no improvement checked jet and its the factory one and the clip on the needle is in the middle I'm banging my head very hard now
