Yes. It has been my experience too that the plating process also bonds the sleeve in better after they run the huge amount of electricity through it.

How many sizes does a cylinder go back up ?

1 mm?

Generally how many top ends can u go threw  with it ?
And say one detonates  will it scratch?

I had some plated down 1mm early on, but they will currently only plate them down .5mm under the current worn out bore. It is bored out, plated then diamond bored. I just get them plated to the max piston size. You are supposed to be able to wear out 5 pistons on the plating. Detonation won't scratch it. I know someone who blew a main bearing with a plated cylinder. There was no damage. He got lucky though in that nothing caught half way through a port. The combustion chamber on his head was trashed. He put in a new one using the same outer shell. He burned up a piston running old gas and had to use acid to get the melted aluminum off. The third piston ran through it was still in it when he sold the machine. Surviving two damaged pistons and still running good on a third, I would think you could wear out more than 5. There was no measurable wear to the cylinder when installing the third piston.

So I will need the final bore of an yz490 piston kit ?
Do I have to send the kit with the cylinder ?
After the coating is toast can u do it again?

The kit is needed at the time of the plating. I can get the kit. Yes, the cylinder can be plated again.

Is the bottom of your YZ490 piston cut? The ones I knew of had the skirt of the piston trimmed down in length.

The new sleeve will probably need to be a little bigger than the old sleeve. The old sleeve gets bored out and it will be hard to bore it exactly centered.

Where is the old sleeve broken? There are shops that will weld a sleeve. This is normally bad because the weld is harder than the rest of the sleeve. It can damage the boring bar and wil wear differently than the rest of the sleeve. With plating though, the sleeve is bored with a diamond bar which can cut the weld. The plating over it is the same so wear will be even.

and to answer ur question a bought the piston being trimmed yes it is

NiCom same as Nikasil right ?
what clearance do they run at?
.005?

also what do they doo abought the exhaust port when they nicom it ?
u just have it pre prepped?
or can u get away with just the 3 holes in the piston?

NiCom is a newer better plating than Nikasil. I have them set the clearance to .005" on the ones I have done. It can be to whatever you want. I have the exhaust port bridge relieved to .004". I didn't spec on the first ones and would more myself. It takes a very long time with that plating. I only drill two holes in the piston. I would suggest also putting a window the size of the rear transfer port on the intake side of the piston such that when that window passes the rear transfer, the angle cause it to be pointed at the center of the dome. This will improve the cooling of the underside of the dome by the intake charge and increase flow to the bridge cooling holes.

Did you want this thread moved to the FL350R section? I did not think about that when I split it off.
