Aftermarket starter quality?
« on: May 20, 2012, 10:21:43 PM »
The starter in my FL350 is totally dead. The commutator is worn out bad enough that it can't be turned down.

Are the aftermarket starters I see on ebay for $120 or so decent? Or should I be on the lookout for a good rebuildable OEM starter?

Looks like the aftermarket starters have only 2 brushes instead of 4, so not as powerful.

I see some of the aftermarket starters now say they are 4 brush in the eBay ads. I have not confirmed that for myself. I have always rebuilt the OEM starter including replacing the commutator with new brass.

Happiness is a freshly turned commutator ring

It's very handy having your own metal lathe  ;D

It looks good. Cleaning the grooves out is that part I find tedious.

I have one comming in the mail, got it on E-bay...supposetly brand new with 4 brush. Got it for 111.00$. I guess i will learn in a very near futur if that was a good buy or not.
But living in Canada i dont expect to use my FL350 during winter times and during summer i have a hole bunch of other stuff going on, so with the kind of use that i will do with it, i think that i should hold for a while.
