« on: May 13, 2012, 12:06:30 PM »
hello all, just picked up an 84 fl250 for a project. i decided to upgrade the engine a bit to a vanguard 16hp, will require a 6 to 8" stretch on the frame and im sure i wont be able to get the orig belt to fit. can you get longer belts and where would be a good place to look? thanks....tim

I would go to an auto parts store that keep several in stock to measure....Remember that width is just as important as length....Are you going to use the stock clutch on the vanguard or something else?

thanks for the reply, i would like to use the stock equipment to save $ if possible, i dont know if it will handle the extra power though. another concern i have is if the rpms will be suitable for the clutch, going from a 2 strk to a 4. got the engine from a shop completely rebuilt for $200, new they retail for $1400, so i hope it will all work out.

If I recall correctly, the stock engine is 18HP. The new engine will have more low end torque and makes it at a lower RPM. That is where you will have trouble with the original clutches. The FL250 has a tapered shafts and the Briggs has a keyed straight shaft. How are you planning to use the stock clutch on the new engine?

im not that far into it yet as far as the shafts, might need a pro fab shop to help out with that. was the stock 250cc engine 18hp?

Yes, I am fairly sure I have read the stock engine was 18HP.

I'm sure it would cost less to just buy a Comet clutch meant to fit the engine shaft than have custom work done.
