FL250 Surging Issue
« on: August 26, 2012, 06:44:42 PM »
New to the odyssey 250.  I have an FL250 I have had for about a month.  Everytime I woldl drive it would run fine with no issues.  However, today, I started it up and it drove great for about 30 seconds and then it would surge in and out.  It woldl go down to a crawl and sound like it was going to die and then every 10 or 15 seconds it would surge and then do it again.  I can shut it off and let it sit a while.  It will start up, run fine for about 30 seconds and then do the same thing.  Any idea what this is.  It evidently does it when it heats up.  The carb is fine and I have not had this issue.  An off the wall idea I had was may be venting on the tank.  Today was the first day I filled the tank all the way up and maybe it is not venting when it heats up.  Just reaching as I don't know what it is becasue it runs fine and then does this after it warms up,  Any help would be appreciated.

Do it again and when it boggs down, hit the kill switch and check the plug to see if it's wet or dry....

Yes it does.  It will bog down and crawl and then surge for a second and then do it again.  I checked the plugs and even replaced and same issue.

Hoodlum's suggestion was for the purpose of diagnosing fuel problems, not just to replace the plug.

The plug was wet with fuel when I pulled it.  It was not dry.

Check your carb over very well...The main jet could have come unscrewed,or the needle clip could have come loose...Also,make positively sure the plug is wet with fuel, and not just oil....You may be able to take a flash light and look into the cylinder to see if the top of the piston is wet....If it is flooding,it will be excessive....If you find it's not flooding, check your fuel filter or your pick up tubes in the tank...

Carb is all good and there is fuel on the plug.  I am going to run it until it does it again and then take the gas cap off and check.  If that is not it, I am assuming something is not filling the float bowl quick enough (either pump or fuel filter).  That would make sense if it is not the vent cap because it runs fine until it probably exhausts the gas in the bowl and then surges as the bowl fills slowly and is exhausted.  Does that sound right.

What is also the best way to test the fuel pump to see if that is the issue.

rig up a temporary fuel supply so you can run the engine while the fuel pump is unplugged...See how much fuel comes out....
Also,if the plug is wet with fuel,it isn't starving for fuel....It's getting too much.....Have you checked your reeds? You keep stating the carb is good....When is the last time you had it apart?

Ok.  Carb is all good.  It is not a venting issue.  Never seen this before.  Ran perfect for about 10 minutes then would bog and surge.  Turn it off, plug is good.  Starts right up runs good then does the same thing.  It appears it does it after it heats up.  Any ideas because I am out of them.  Help.

Not sure if the 250 even has one, but the pulser coil in the 400 can cause erratic running. In the 'throwing stuff out there' vein. Sounds as though it could be electrical.
The usual 'my two cents' disclaimer applies. :)
