cleaning the fl250 gas tank
« on: February 01, 2009, 05:38:41 PM »
what to use to clean out the tubes  both are packed solid with crud..
I have naval jelly soaking in the tank right now , hoping it will help break it loose.  I can't seem to find anything that will fit inside the tube coming from out side where the petcock was? any tips how to clean out the tubes

There can be a screen in the tank end of the tubes. Can you get a wire down the tube from the petcock side at all? If you can and the tubes are blocked at what seems like the very end you might have to cut the ends off. The best I recall though FL250 pickup tubes don't have any kind of screen on the end....at least the one I had didn't. I cleaned it out and kreemed it with good results. I used a coat hanger that had been cut off with side cutter. Chuck that up in a drill and drill away.

hooked drill up to the coat hanger and damn thing twisted off inside the tube.. :x

at least the the "ON" side tube is clear  who needs reserve   ..LOL

I guess I could cut the tubes out and braze new tubes back in.

You must have really been going after the blockage if it broke off. Sorry to hear about that. Before it broke were you able to "punch through whatever was blocking the tube in the first place? I'm not sure if its possible, but you might be able cut off the reserve tube just where the far end of the coat hanger broke off, then pull the hanger wire out and bend the remainder of the tube down?

I took the tank to a friends house who is a cert. welder and does gas tanks everyday for a trucking company.
Now have new tubes installed  and a filters on both tubes..

plus a very clean tank now.. kreem is the next step.
I should have it all together this weekend.
I am going to try and get pictures of the tank repair job to post here.
it looks great.

now one more question... what is the point gap in inches? I am not up on my metric stuff.

girth first

Thanks , got her up and running now..
man lots of fun for a 250 it goes pretty darn fast,

custom made rubber motor mounts, cause I was not going to pay 68 bucks for a set.

my friend has all materials and is willing to sell sets of 3 for $38 shipped lower 48 states.

i will take pics in a day or so, it is now raining here.

again thanks for the specs and all the help here..
