Odyssey FL350R / Re: Which case splitter/puller to buy?

Same holes that hold the side covers on.

Pulled the crankcase down to the point where I need a case splitter.

I wasn't happy at the torque levels the nuts on both ends of the crankcase. Barely tapped a ratchet to pull the nut in the stator, and the big nut came off *very* easily with a wrench after flattening out the lock washer. I'd guess they were both on with less than 15lb/ft of torque.

Received the used starter bendix assembly yesterday, as well as a new piston pin bearing, off ebay. The bendix is in a lot better shape than the one I have, so the second starter is ready to go. Now....to rebuild the dead engine.

If the killswitch isn't actually wired to turn off all the power (not just shut the engien off), the battery will run down.

Yep! Only way to do it is pull the PTO pulley. They are buried behind it.

Dunno why Honda did that. It's an obvious design oversight. Fortunately, if you rebuild the starter right and vent the balancer gear case properly, you shouldn't need to take it apart for a long time.

The puller (just a long specialized bolt) that fits my 1994 Polaris XLT sled also fits the Comet 102C clutch. Not sure if it'd work on the OEM Honda clutch, if that is what you have.

I'm definitely going to install a vent while I have the engine torn down for repairs.

I'm not familiar with the Odyssey spindles, but normally on hubs, you fill the cavity inside the hub with some grease so that the grease in the bearings doesn't migrate out of them and into that cavity, letting them run dry.

Is the counterbalancer/starter oiling issue fixed with the OEM Honda base gasket, or is the vent mod still recommended to keep oil out of the starter?

I noticed that the bearing that came with the starter rebuild kits I bought is sealed on both sides, instead of having a metal shield on one side like the stock bearing on the end of armature shaft.

Odyssey FL350R / Engine gasket kit?

Is the Vesrah engine gasket kit good quality? I'm looking for the full engine kit, ebay has it for $65.

Ordered a new 80mm Wiseco piston kit off ebay. Also...a used, hopefully good, starter gear bendix assembly. The one in the second starter I'm rebuilding sounds a bit rough and the bendix doesn't like to retract on it's own. Yeah...the engine would probably spin it enough to make it disengage, but I'm not gonna risk it, what with what an utter PITA pulling the starter again would be.

Odyssey FL350R / Different front wheel offset
« on: June 03, 2012, 03:34:01 PM »
I understand what changing the track width on front suspension can do, but I'm curious what real-world effect (good or bad) you guys have seen with going to a wider offset wheel, like the front rims on this FL350:

Does it severely impact the handling stability?

From what I've read so far, the general opinion is that they might make up for deficiencies in the intake tract that would be better fixed by some light port work on the intake side of the head. They also might help high end RPM's by slightly increasing the crankcase volume, but that's not what I'm after.

Odyssey FL350R / Re: E3 spark plugs...
« on: June 03, 2012, 03:06:56 PM »
All the sparkplug has to do is light the mixture. E3's don't work any better than standard NGK's. Likewise some flamethrower 60kV ignition coil doesn't actually work any better than the stock OEM Honda coil.

Scouting around for parts during the rebuild on one of my FL350's. Are the reed spacer blocks from Moose actually worth any real-world horsepower or torque?
