Pilot FL400R / FL400R Jetting
« on: March 26, 2007, 10:07:46 PM »
I am a little stumped. I've been running pretty fat. So, I just changed the reeds to boyseen. I used the stock cage and bolted them on. The stock reeds did have a gap between the seat and the reed. Still fat. I dropped the pilot jet from 52 to 50 to 48 and the main from a 140 to a 138. I even moved the needle from the #2 groove to the #1 groove. Making all these changes I can get the snap into the throttle. No problem.

My problem is I can't get the idle to move no matter what jetting I have tried so far. It will barely idle at 700 rpm and won't go up or down when I turn the idle screw. I can screw it all the way in or almost all the way out and no difference. The same with the air screw. No change. I was getting ready to go to the 145 on the pilot screw tonight to see if that would help any but lost the clip on the needle. Have to wait till I get another now.

I thought maybe the float had a hole in it and was sinking. No fluid inside it. I don't have a float guage but I tried using a 6in machinist rule and when it touches the seat it looks to be spot on 16mm.

Any ideas?

Also, my son dropped the needle clip in the gravel and it can't be found. Can I just use a c-clip from a automotive store or do I need to spring for the $18 needle set?

Thanks,
Ed

Where do I get one? Repairmanuals.com doesn't have any and that's where I usually get all my manuals.

Thanks.

Odyssey FL350R / FL350 to FL400
« on: October 24, 2006, 06:14:07 PM »
Does anybody have a list or an idea on what parts will interchange with these two bikes?

I just bought a 89 FL400 and am looking at converting it so I can ride it. Once I determine exactly what needs to be modified then I will be selling my FL350 either in parts or as a whole if I can find someone interested in it. I made several modifications so I could ride it because I'm a quadriplegic and don't have grip in my hands. But, it could very easily be put back to the hand controls on the steering wheel like it originally came with.

I just don't want to sell any of the extra parts I have accumulated or any of the parts if I decide to part it out if they will work on my new Pilot.

Thanks,
Ed

Odyssey FL350R / Works Shocks
« on: October 16, 2006, 09:00:13 PM »
Can someone give me a quick overview of the pros and cons or benefits of one type verses the other with the Works shocks remote reservoir, on shock reservoir, and no reservoir. I assume there are the three different types.

Also, I see Randy at Oddy Salvage has some Baja Magnums for sale. How do they compare?

These are for stock replacements on a FL350.

I am mostly a woods/trail rider. Trails we ride are well ridden and have deep ruts. Very bumpy riding.

I just want to make a good purchase the first time as expensive as they are. I need the best suspension I can get being a quadriplegic too!

Thanks.

Odyssey FL350R / Seat Options for FL350
« on: September 11, 2006, 09:23:45 PM »
I am looking for ideas on a replacement seat for my FL350.

I changed my seat to a Kirkley and 5 point harness. However, during my July 4th ride, I developed an area by my tailbone that caused me to end up having surgery. Being a quadriplegic, I have been unable to work and in bed for the last 2 months healing. I've got another month to go.

This was aggrevated from me "shearing" back in forth in the seat while riding over bumps. Even though I installed the 5 point harness I still have some movement while riding.

Now, how do I solve this so I can ride again without having this problem develop again? I think maybe:

1. replace the cloth/mesh seat cover with a vinel one to lesson the "shearing"

2. add some sort of jell to the bottom of the seat to give it more of a fluid ride in the seat and lessen the vibrations

3. replace the seat again with some sort of suspension seat.

Any ideas?

Odyssey FL350R / Electrical Experts...I need some pointers
« on: June 05, 2006, 10:55:58 PM »
Ok...after jetting down down down to try to cure my running poorly in the midrange, I decided to check some of my electrical circuits with an ohm meter.

My results per the manual:

1. coil - the primary coil test was within range. the secondary coil test was out of range so I pulled the spare out of my extra parts and both tests were in range so I swapped it out.

2. alternator - tested within range

3. ignition timing at 1300 rpm - aligned right on the F mark

Now I'm not sure with these:

4. pulse generator - 1. where is this located, in the CDI unit? 2. book says resistance in 50-170 ohms. I'm reading 35000 ohms. This is bad I take it.

5. CDI unit - some of the plugs don't even give me a reading.

The book says you need a Sanwa Tester or a Kowa Tester or you may get a false reading on the CDI. Is this true and if so is it also true for the pulse generator that I could be getting a bad reading?

I'm using a Fox Valley 516 Component Analyser tester that I got from an auto auction when a local business closed. It seemed to give the proper reading for the other tests.

Would the CDI have anything to do with getting proper jetting or should I just be looking at fuel/air mixture?

I did an air box mod by cutting 4- 1 inch holes in the lid and attached some air filter material to the inside of the holes to keep some of the dirt out. I am also running a 43 pilot jet and a 145 in the main and the needle is on the second notch from the top.

It runs descent at idle and reving in neutral. Under load it runs like crap almost like it's starving for fuel at take off and up through 3/4 throttle. it spits and sputters. WOT it runs pretty good.

Pull the plug and it is dark like it is running rich. I hate to jet lower and take any chances. I'm thinking of changing out the carb but was wondering if the CDI and Pulse generator (whatever that is) could be causing my problems instead.

I know it is a lot of questions all spread out. Any help sure would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Odyssey FL350R / 94C Clutch for FL350
« on: April 13, 2006, 11:14:19 PM »
I just replaced my FL350 clutch with a new 94C. I like the lower engagement it has over the 102C that was on it. When I first put it on I sprayed it with Comet Clutch Lube. It was quiet compared to my old clutch. I ran it around the yard a couple of times and it worked great. Then it developed this loud screeching/chirping noise at idle and a scraping noise when it disengages. Is this normal?

I took the face off and sprayed the bushings but it didn't help.

Is it defective or do all these 94C clutches make this type of irritating noise.

It came set up with orange spring and 9 pucks. That's how I installed it. Out of the box.

The belt looks to be within tolerance and good shape.

Any ideas on how to correct this?
