Pilot FL400R / Big Tom's LT Pilot is departing the states.
« on: March 03, 2015, 10:07:55 PM »
Big Tom's  LT Pilot is on it's way to Canada. Mark W. has sold it to John W. of Winnipeg. This was a very well restored and improved long travel Pilot with a whole lot of history. Just to share one experience; Big Tom invited me to share the driving to a race held at Spring Valley, Ohio many moons ago. He drove up from Houston, Tx. 14 hrs. to pick me up. We drove 17 more hours to S.V. Ohio. Tom entered the mod. class with this car. It was still a 400 but L.T. He got second place in the mod. class. Tom had also brought a pristine stock 400 for me to race. I'd never raced before so Tom had me do some hot laps in this L.T. to learn to jump the car. I entered the stock class and got first place. This was all just bragging rights as the pay was like 60 bucks for my win. On the way back we stopped at a gas station that had a Dirt Cheap label on practically everything in the store. We both bought cases of what was truly poor beer but had this cool dirt Cheap label on it with a Red Rooster. This was a no brainer for a name for the newly established Pilot racing team. Chime in if you have some history to share about Big Tom or his Pilot that once also raced in the dessert. Hopefully John or Mark will post a picture of it.

Pilot FL400R / Toyman is once again piloting a Pilot
« on: December 09, 2012, 12:36:04 PM »
The Toyman had to sell off his pair of Pilots & pair of 350s and the Drak. quite a few years back to settle up with ol Uncle Sam (managed to hang onto a fleet of 250s). Many of my local friends have gone the RZR & VW sandcar route so I followed but really missed the thrill of a small single seat car. The Pilot IMO has always been the best bang for the buck so I finally got another one. It was not maintained well so now I'm trying to catch up and correct issues before there is a failure like I just had with a counter balancer seisure. I feel like I need to relearn everything I once knew about these cars since I've been away so long. I now have a fresh (ported) engine with the larger PWK carb & PB clutch. Everything else is stock. Just put new rear brake pads on, flushed out and changed the trans. oil yesterday. Today I'm flushing out brake fluids, lubing cables & inspecting front brake shoes. Now I'm ready for some advice as to what I should be looking at next? Also what exhaust pipe would be recommended for trail riding & sand duning that is not to loud ? It's good to be "Back in the saddle again" !

Technical / Drak Restoration
« on: July 27, 2006, 10:56:42 PM »
I don't have much more to show at this time but here is a few more pics. of where it stands today. Hope to get the new silencer soon so we can weld the mounting tabs and get the frame painted. Roof wing & hood repairs still need to be completed too.

Technical / Drakart upgrade
« on: July 27, 2006, 10:00:47 PM »
As some of you know I'm into a restoration of my Formula Cross Drakart. I wanted to show an upgrade we did that I felt was important enough to share with all Drakart owners. I've never liked the way the frame is designed around the driven and asked my fabricator if he had any ideas on installing a removeable tube in front of the driven that would offer more strength to the rear of the frame. The picture below shows what he came up with. It has been left partially out so you can see the design better.

Pilot FL400R / Cracked pipe
« on: May 25, 2006, 08:40:13 AM »
I'm thinking this Drak I'm picking up may have a cracked expansion pipe. Is it best to gas weld this or can I use a 110v wire feed? I don't have a small bottle torch setup but do have a light duty Lincoln I could take along for on site repair.

Technical / Jetting the 583 Rotax
« on: May 25, 2006, 12:55:20 AM »
I'm wanting to know what range of jets I should pickup for the 583 to run at 6000ft. I think it has 320s in it now and it was running just a bit fat at 1100ft with them (at L.S.)  4 weeks ago.   :?:

Ride Reports / Events / Races / L.S. Okla.
« on: May 07, 2006, 09:50:57 PM »
I've just returned from a grueling five days of thrashing the sand at L.S.
Drakman brought both of his recently aquired ATVR modified Draks with 583 Rotax power plants with him. Big Tom & I were asked to be test pilots to do a thorough shake down on them to reveal any problems. I was told they have been sitting for several years. After recharging the nitrogen into the shocks & some jet changes as well as some new drive clutches they ran out very well for the first time out. Jerry didn't have much to work with to tune the clutches correctly but they still were rocket ships and hoot to drive just the same. Spcled had his new 660 tubo Drak out for its' maiden voyage & it was incredible! The wow factor has just been turned up a notch with this car. I took both Pilots, my Trail Boss & 250r along. I was very impressed with the TRX250R to the point I'm selling it as I'll certainly kill myself if I don't. First one to put $3000 in my hands owns it & they won't be disappointed.

General Discussion / Plastic
« on: April 24, 2006, 10:23:13 AM »
I just picked up an 86 TRX250R.
The stock plastic is shot but it came with some aftermarket junk that looks ok.
My problem is the aftermarket piece for the front is missing a mount.
Anyone out there have a 250r with aftermarket plastic?
Shoot me a pic. of the front piece mounting.

Second question; Where is the best supplier for good plastic simular to stock?

General Discussion / Snow Rabbit/Snow Runner
« on: April 12, 2006, 09:31:58 PM »
Yes I do have a SnoRabbit. I ran it for two years with very little trouble then it locked up at WOT for no apparent reason other than possibly bearing failure. Jetting was fine. I havn't taken the time to tear into it. Hoser sent me a link to goobs of new parts available for it so I may just get a new engine as their dirt cheap. My other thought was to use swap in a 100cc Partner chop saw I have. These are a hoot to ride even though their not real fast.

Pilot FL400R / Thanks Ludedude
« on: March 22, 2006, 11:26:12 PM »
Just a quick thankyou to Ludedude for helping me with the transaction to get the new Digatron & also at a discount. I just recieved it today but am to busy to install it. I'm currently buried into the project of retrofitting my recently acquired enclosed trailer in time to use it this Friday the 24-26th to go to Waynoka, Okla. with some others that are already there. I'll take the gauge along with tools to install it in case it rains so I'll have something else to do besides watch the drops fall & drink beer.

Technical / Digatrons
« on: February 05, 2006, 09:19:03 PM »
I'm new to this board but have been (and still am) an owner of all the Honda FLs.  I live within 140 miles of L.S. so this is my playground. I have the DT-32k I've used for years on my 350s and have been pleased with it. I'm finally installing  watercooled heads on both of my 350s & now want the ability to monitor this temp. Should I monitor head or water temp? I feel I need to watch the head temp. but am not sure how this sensor is attached. Which model is perfered by most with water cooled cars?
