Hoodlum,

I'm a tentative "YES" for the DP trip. I should know for sure towards the end of July.

Pilot FL400R / PoofKaboom! What Causes The Swiss Cheese Effect?
« on: December 21, 2004, 08:06:15 AM »
Moskito,

Glad to here you're busy. I love to play with CNC equipment (and z50/ct70 motors) I try to play with the machines here at work, but the General (GE) doesn't like it when I start making things for my own personal use.
Huh, immagine that!

On the z50 and ct70 stuff.....
A while back, when I worked at a NASA facility in LA (LA as in "Lousiana", not "Los Angeles" or "lower Alabama") I used to write Technical Tips for the International Mini Bike Association (IMBA).
Not that I have any pull or anything like that, but you may want to contact Guy Foster at <http://www.swiftsite.com/minibike> and see if he is interested in selling your minibike parts on his web site. Tell him I sent you (he may remember me?)

OK all.....time for your "end of the year" welding engineering lesson.

>> Moskito wrote:

Please note: a weld made without the use of filler wire is refered to as an "autogenous" weld.

There now.......don't you feel smarter?

..............ok, I admit it, I'm sitting here at work and I'm bored. I should be out riding my pilot or inventing some kind of cool off-road gadget. But nooooo, I have to sit here until 4:00 with the rest of the nerds.

I'm good for a DP day trip on Tuesday the 28th if you guys are still planning on being there. Havn't told the wife yet, but hopefully that won't be a problem. I'll get her a really nice Christmas present.

I may even be able to talk Throttle into joining me.

Let me know.

Pilot FL400R / Repairing a-arm tabs - What / how to do?
« on: December 09, 2004, 01:39:09 PM »
Now THAT is a really cool web site - very cool - thanks Moskito!

Buck,
Reinforcing washers...I was thinking the exact same thing when I was looking at it at DP. However, the site that Moskito suggested has changed my mind. I'd cut them off and weld on new ones.

Sorry to hear you're not going to make it Tim. Not to worry......there will be plenty of time to ride in the spring.

Try to get some info on that "litte saudi" place that's near you. I hear they have some sand dunes. If so, I wanna ride there. Let me know what you find out.

See ya,

Pilot FL400R / Pilot Dual Air Intake Modification

Wow, that looks great!

How much time and money were invested in the lid?

Pilot FL400R / Pilot "dual inlet" airbox lid
« on: July 07, 2004, 08:35:44 AM »
Don't have a picture right now.

The lid simply fits over the box lip. To get it to seal I got a strip of adhesively backed open cell weatherstripping and placed it around the edge of the top of the box. In order to get the lid to seat (with the additional thickness of the weather stripping material) I smoothed the inside edge of the lid using my dremel tool. Now it fits good.

Ive only tested it once. The test was inconclusive because I didn't have pre-filters on the intake tubes. It was very dusty, so my uni-filter still got dirty. On the other hand, I did notice more throttle response because the engine was getting more air.

Pilot FL400R / Pilot "big bore" mods
« on: July 07, 2004, 08:15:20 AM »
More (somewhat usless) info on Pilot "big bore" mods.

I have a Pilot cylinder that has a bore measurement of 3.354" (85.192mm). I've found the following pistons but have no idea if they will work. I also don't know any of the pin height measurements of these pistons.

Polaris 400 (x2 over stock) measures 85mm
Suzuki LT500r = 86mm
Kawasaki KX500 = 86mm

A 3.346" diameter (85mm) piston would give a piston to wall clearance of .004". and create a 450 cc displacement with my jug. Is that too much?

I don't have the time or ambition to mess with it at the moment because my pilot is almost brand spankin new (I just changed the rear break pads that were put on at the factory). The jug and head I have are for sale if anyone is interested. ([email protected])

Pilot FL400R / The dual inlet airbox cover
« on: July 07, 2004, 07:26:01 AM »
The dual inlet airbox cover project is complete. There has not been too much demand so there are only a few ready to go. The price is $60 each.
I know that seems high, but a lot of labor went into making the lid. It's cheaper to modify a stock lid, but it certainly isn't as clean looking. They are made in red gel-coat like the storage compartments I sell.

contact me at [email protected] if you'd like one.

Thanks,

Technical / FL350 air scoops
« on: June 15, 2004, 07:16:18 AM »
Yes, they can be made from fiberglas, however, one side will be perfect and the other will be mildly rough (due to a one sided mold). All you have to do is send me an email with the number of sets you want and I'll let you know the cost per set. ([email protected])

Please keep in mind that the parts will not be reasonably cheap unless you intend to buy 30 to 50 sets. The bulk of the cost in making fiberglass parts comes from the labor and materials used in making the mold.

Let me know.
