Title: FL350 clutch questions
Post by: Doc - TEAM WAX on July 17, 2019, 06:54:53 AM
I'm new to the Odyssey world. Picked up a fairly nice 85 FL350. Just a couple questions... It has a salsbury clutch unit. It does not grab or start pulling until 1/3 to 1/2 throttle. Any adjustments..?? Engine has a slight occasional miss and sluggish ( I know a couple things contributing to this. oil/fuel ratio is too rich and fuel petcock needs replaced. -in process of correcting ). Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

lean/rich refers to air/fuel mix, not oil/fuel. Rich is high fuel to air ratio. More oil to fuel makes the mixed fuel thicker and will actually lean out your air/fuel mix slightly. The stock slow jet is a 52. Lowering to a 45 will make your throttle response quicker. That is leaning out the air/fuel mix from idle to 1/4 throttle. The rich factory setting is made worse by that most people run a 32:1 oil mix rather than the suggested 20:1. The thinner fuel flows easier making it run even richer.

You do not want your clutch engagement lower. It will just bog the engine because it has not come into its power yet. Many people actually run a higher engagement RPM. Tuning components are not available for the discontinued salsbury clutch. It requires changing to an aftermarket clutch. If you change the jet as suggested above, the RPMs will climb faster prior to engagement. So it will seem to engage quicker.

Thanks for the info. What fuel/oil mix do you recommend for the Odyssey? In the past I have run 40:1 in liquid cooled engines. Thanks again.

Mine seems to be running rich now. I pull the air box lid off and it straightens up. It has a full DG exhaust, stock airbox setup with a K&N filter. Do you have any jetting recommendations for my setup? Might save me a little time and trouble. Thanks for all the info.

It should have a larger main jet than stock with that setup and the 45 slow jet. Fuel will puddle in the bottom end from the super rich stock slow jet making it seem rich all the way to full throttle. Then if you make a really long wide open throttle run, that fuel burns off, engine goes lean and burns up. Once dropping the slow jet, then do a plug chop at wide open throttle to check that. You may need to go up a size or two.
