Title: Site merge...site features..site direction
Post by: ludedude on August 05, 2005, 10:06:22 AM
1. The ability to add mods easily. - there's a constant growth of mods for phpbb, so it's easy to add/grow the site function wise...easy...well relatively :p
2. The extensive permission system -  just like this usergroup...easy to create and allow various levels of access to users to various sections and functions..
3. The ability PM system, and blind email system. I like the blind email feature so that you do not have to expsoe your address to email spiders (whatever) but can still have people contact you via email.
4. Integrated Chat - although auto-login is not currently working (not to self...self FIX that!) I like the fact that you can see who's in from the within the forum
5. The "read thread" system (I read from several computers, I really like this feature) as well as the option to mark all threads read...when I get through reading what I want I can mark them all read, so the next time I click to read only unread messages those are not selected.
6. The ability to give it the category hierarchy look or the bubble threading look at the same time. One function I want to add is to enhance the bubble thread page (http://nsconnect.ca/forum/bubble.php?fi=461) so that there is a post link in which you can create a post and select where it goes, similiar to how on KiowA's you selevt the topic type. Idea here is to make new posting faster/easier....that and/or add a jumpbox (like on the forum pages) to the portal page.
7. I like the thumnailing feature of forum posting..users do not have to resize photos, it;s done so automatically, yet fullsize can be viewed by clicking on them.
8. The gallery, the ability to house photos in categories, and add keywords to aid in the search function built into the gallery. Users can have their own albums...it does slide shows (I use this at work ;) ).
9. Ability to email post info to usergroups..I'll email this post info to the usergroupo so y'all see this.
10. Easy to add new links to the menus and header bar menus
11. Calendar Mod - not used much...but could be. Users can post events and they display on the Calendar
12. Adding smilies is easy as uploading the new images to the needed directory and naming them in the admin panel...got any others you want Moskito? :)
13. Ability to bring up all your posts...or those of any user.
14. The new format....weeks out?...will bring back all the features I used to have on here in the old format...all user info (phone, age, etc) ability to share that info or not...and share it with only those on your buddy list..user online indicators, etc....birthdays in the calendar....there's a lot of small stuff that goes with that mod.
15. Avatars :p
16. option between quick reply and the more advanced reply options
17. ability to add images into your post or to the end of your post.
18. I want to add the blog mod. Basically it allows a user to create an online journal of a...project (new buggy build) or a ride report. They can photos and written pieces in a linked section of the forum.
19. The memberlist allows you to contact users through PM or email
20. You can hide your online prescense from other users...if you just want to browse and not be seen...in the new format you will be able to select wether buddies can see you or not when you're in hidden mode.
21. Ability to be notified via email of new PM's (optional)
22. Ability to be notified of posts to a particualr thread (optional)
23. Can make posting allowable by guests, if the that's seen as a good thing
24. Ability to have different templates (looks) available (right now I only have the one) and even different ones for different sections
25. We can, and I'd like to add a section just like the FAQ section...but have it as a techincal FAQ section.

WOW,,,guess there's lots here that I like and use...more than I intially thought, for sure

Here's a list I did up..last week? I'm moving this to an open section for all to read.

As KiowA has posted on P-O.com we're both willing to give up features and or site format to combine and move ahead under one site.

Regardless of what is decided..or if we decide to do nothing. I will be pulling POPS out of the multi-forum forum it is in (NSCONNECT) and only including off-road buggy (read pilot, drakart, etc) type sub-forums.

One thing I should have added is the ability to edit one's posts..I like that feature too :)

I'm not sure what features Andy can integrate and which ones he can and how much time he has and is willing to dedicate to introduce those features.

I have just now read over the posts on P-O.com from users and their feelings/ideas. Yes I prefer the phpbb format and features. One thing to consider is...you don't have to use the features you don't like and a simple user interface can be created that operates much like how P-O.com is now for users who like that while feature ricj site is available too.

I've had this page up for quite awhile now http://nsconnect.ca/forum/bubble.php?fi=461 with a bit more formating it could look and operate much like P-O.com is now....yet in exsists in harmony with the portal page and all the forum's sub-sections.

Just info for the masses

OK, I've tallied the posts on P-O.com to try and come up with some kind of consensus. From what I get out of the posts (as of Aug 16), I see 10 votes for P-O.com as is, 27 for POPS format with some changes to make navigation easier, or P-O.com with added features.

The features of POPS are appreciated/desired, but with a simplier interface. The most mentioned features are the who is online and the chat. Some others asked for features that POPS already has (view unread posts, and gallery) so a simplier layout and highlighting those need to be addressed.

I'm going to try and play with the layout some more tonight and tomorrow night....if someone with high speed and ftp software can give me a hand I'm going to duplicate the site to another server to try and rid the site of slow server issues.

I'll try to make this site conform as much as possible to what I got out of the posts on P-O.com. Then we'll see where we go. I'm trying for a dual layout format. A simple one and one pretty much as is. I'll leave the current one as is for now and concentrate on the simplified layout. You can see what I have so far at by clicking the bubble thread page link up top. I have to change the redirects after you make a post so that you stay in the simple layout...that's what I'll be working on next.

I removed pretty much everything from that layout, put in the bubble thread (last 100 threads), who is online (forum and chat), reduced the menu options, and moved the header links to the bottom of the page.

Post your thoughts, what's are the  most important features? What should remain in the simple layout?

I'll be in chat tonight....

Well I guess POPS will remain on the net and continue to cater to those who choose to make use of it. Enough people still visit, have posted, pm'd and/or emailed me stating they'd like to see POPS be the site format of the two if they were to merge, and/or they want the two to remain accessible. I've put a lot of time in as of late to make it easier to navigate the site for guests and those not use to the phpbb format. I can see that even some users of P-O.com who said they have, and only will visit P-O.com, have been browsing the site too ;)

I was helping Mike setup his site(newfiesteak.com) (http://www.newfiesteak.com)  and found a few things that were missing from here..mainly dealing with the arcade section...I'll be fixing them...then probably leaving the site format/look alone for awhile.
