Title: Coal Creek July 22-24
Post by: ludedude on June 21, 2005, 06:54:39 PM
Dates: Thurs, July 21, 22, 23. Riding Friday, Saturday, and maybe Sunday.

For the planned trip to Coal Creek, this is the hotel Vrroom, Bucked, and I have selected.

This hotel is only a few miles from the trailhead. It has an outdoor pool and continental breakfast.

Special Rate: $70 Ask for the Wind Rock Rate

Comfort Inn
433 S. Rutgers Ave. , Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37830
Phone: (865) 481-8200 Fax: (865) 483-6142

I called around and asked. I talked to the Hampton Inn, but they have no parking for trucks and trailers. Used to be able to park in the pawnshop parking lot next door, but can't anymore.

After a long day's ride, we can hang by the pool and relax. Looking forward to a great trip. Who's in

Lude,
You gonna make the CC ride???
You NEED to.
It's a great place and you need to come out of the Great White North (eh) and see what real heat and humidity is. 8)

Lude, Glad to hear you're going to make the CC ride.  That is an awful long way though.  How long is it going to take you to get here?   Are you coming by your self?

I'm having a really hard time getting my cv hubs out.  If I hadn't damaged the output shaft seals to get PB blaster past them I'd leave them in.  I built a tool to pull on them with a lot of force.  Maybe there free up in a couple of days.  I'm pretty much dead in the water with this project until I can get the tranny back in.  I have attached a pic of the tool.

I've had at least one..I think both of ine out last year or the year before...so I'm hoping I can pop them fairly easily.

As far as me making CC....just say I'm working on it :) If someone can line a basket case up for me (chassis and tranny) and a buyer for mine that would make it a lot easier    It'll be ~26hrs of driving...I'm not sure if Tman's up for the trip now or not....haven't heard fro mhim in awhile.....

Lude, 7 may not be that many - but what a group!  I was actually thinking that if you and Ramjet were also going I'd even try to get there (I'd have to try to organise a hire ride but would like to go even just to meet the guys in person).  Throw in Sniper, Big Tom, Red and Kiowa and I'd definitely be there!

I may be able to make this ride also. An old friend called today saying he was going out there so I am interested in this ride. 1000 miles each way, ouch.

I'm trying to get there - it's sort of late to make arrangements but looks like it may come together!!!

Does anybody know of (or have) anything I could hire to ride? (I'll be gentle!)

Hey Ramjet and Kiowa, this may be a big enough event for you guys to pull out the stops and get there?

Hey Oz - you any good on an XR50?  I can bring a couple of them for you...

Wish I had something or knew someone that had something for you to play on.  I'll do a bit of searching.

Would you consider throwing a leg over an old YZ250?

I'll play on an XR and/or the YZ and share my pilot  :P

Can you ride a kx500? You can ride mine all weekend.
I will even offer up my pilot for a ride.
Title: Coal Creek July 22-24
Post by: Ozpilot on July 03, 2005, 07:23:27 PM
Thanks for those offers guys - I'm happy I'll have a ride if I can get there.  I'm mainly keen to meet people in person anyhow.

Now to lock in some time off work and flights (they look long at this stage - will have stops both ways between Aus and LA - yuk - unlucky - it'll be worth it!)  Will probably get to LA on 13th and leave on 25th. Got to work the rest out now.

Stone, at home I ride a WR 360 (Husky not Yamaha) and a Cagiva WMX500.  I haven't ridden a KX500 but I figure if I can hang on to the Cagiva I should find the KX civilised!

ahem,  if I were given the choice (between those 3) I'd go Fosters (not that I drink any of those 3 - I normally go Mexican)

I'll be bringing 2 Pilots and a bike. One of the Pilots has been offered up already to "a special guest". (just cause he walks funny is no excuse to call him that) Anyway, I too am willing to share with anyone who is coming a long distance or has acquired "special guest" status. So if you guys want to fly in, I'm sure we can accommodate you!

Trailer is now 95, little more welding, add a second set of tail/brake lights and the modifcations done. The gate has hard links to extend the deck so I can fit the two pilots on one behind the other. Then to pack the wheel bearings for the trip.

Hallelujah!  I finally got one of the Pilot hubs out.  I feel a lot closer to being able to make this ride now.  If you look a few post back I posted a a jig I made to put a lot of force on the hub while soaking it in PB blaster.  Well as best I can tell the jig didn't do shit.  I went to Harbor freight tools yesterday and bought their 13 lb slide hammer.  After making an adapter to fit on my jig's 5/8" all thread rod, I slammed that slide hammer about 10 times and the hub finally popped out.  You could tell the PD Blaster had soaked into the yoke by the smell.  Here's an image of the hub.

Awesome! Glad you got that damn thing out! Can't tell from the picture...my splines were wore fairly bad, are yours? My main shaft looks A-1 though. Glad I changed then out now. Next is to do Ted's and Sinclair's    I'll be needing the slide hammer for those, where as mine popped out by hand....they had been out 2 years ago and never-seized heavily ;)

Make sure you take a good stainless brush to those spines.  The type that fits on the end of a drill works pretty good.   Get it as clean as you can.

Same goes for the hole it came out of.   Once again - stainless brush.  If you can find something like a bottle washer in metal that would be killer.  I used one of those little wooden brushes you find at the autoparts store.   Trim the handle so it goes in farter/easier.  Consider it a one shot use brush too..

Slop anti-sieze all over the ends of the joint and inside the hole also.  You can't use too much in this case.

Post by: betel on July 11, 2005, 08:13:48 AM
I found probably about as good a brush as you could use to clean the receiver part of the shaft.  Plumbers use a round stainless bristle brush to clean fittings.  THe 1" brush is a tight fit inside the receiver.  Theyr'e about $3 at home depot.
