Personally, I would stick with stock, but that's my opinion. I bought an oddy with a Mikuni on it, and it never ran right. I yanked it and went back to stock and it runs fine. Just my opinion....

Congrats on the buy!

The aftermarket cage... I dunno who made it. I know back in the 80's they used to race these things and there were a few people making cages for them. I have seen that design before, but don't know who built it. There are also a lot of people who have built different cages on their own over the years, such as the case of your other one. I don't really care for the way they did that cage, but that's a personal opinion. It IS better than the original 77-79 rollbar tho. Definitely safer, if it was done right.

If you want to know what year models you actually have, there is a sheet that lists all of the numbers from the different years, including engine numbers. Just ask, and I or someone else can get you the link to it....

Looks pretty cool. I would be a little concerned about rolling it hard. I would be afraid of crushing the tank and spilling fuel everywhere. Other than that, I like it :)

You are not supposed to rev the engine without the belt on as it can cause the clutch to explode.

I would get a clutch to fit the crank shaft of the engine you bought and leave everything else intact.

I would have to agree... I would rather keep the original motor. The clutch isn't THAT expensive, and if you already got the engine running anyway.........

Just sayin.....

BUT, if you insist on going ahead with the swap, I might be interested in your old engine and parts  ;)

I think he is one of these people with a very narrow (almost obsessive) sort of view. He definitely doesn't seem to be able to think outside of his little box. And yes, he has a very huge bark when hiding behind his computer. I would bet he has the balls of a chiuahua in person tho.

I am sure he resents you making that change to your pilot, since I am sure he in no way posesses the intellect to come up with an idea like that on his own! lol

He just a lil man in a big man's world.....

I have butted heads with Hoser. He is a douche. I am one of the "banned" people from his board. Like I care tho. I haven't lost any sleep over it. He is pretty much a Nazi as far as I am concerned, and ANYONE who doesn't see everything his way is bashed and trashed. I think he is a narrow minded a$$hole.

Let him and his sheep have their stupid board and keep banning people..... eventually it will be just them by themselves.

As for the whole ebay thing.... all I am gonna say is I no longer buy parts off of there. I understand a person making a profit, but people have just gotten stupid on ebay with the prices they are asking for stuff. I am not pointing at anyone in particular.... I am just saying, alot of stuff on there is ridiculously over priced. Likewise, there are certain people on ebay (as already stated in this thread) who are blatantly lying to people saying certain OEM stuff is faulty, saying that certain things are no longer available, etc etc and marking their prices way up and cheating people who don't know any better. As far as those folks are concerned, I wouldn't buy from them if they listed their crap for $1. I don't like liars, cheats and theives.

I think the better question is, what kind of mods are you WANTING to do????

If it runs good, and has all the fenders, pretty good tires, and isn't beat half to hell, then yeah, $700 is a pretty fair price.

Have you checked to see WHY the brakes aren't working? Just curious....

Congrats on the purchase!

Compression should be right around 130 psi.

What year Oddy is it? That is kinda important when trouble shooting... knowing whether it is a points or CDI system. If you don't know the year, look at the engine itself... see where the wires lead (and how many there are) coming out of the engine. If it is a CDI, there should be 4 wires, and one of the wires will lead up to the CDI before going to the coil. Actually, knowing the year isn't fool proof... I bought one that was an '83 with a '77 engine in it.....

How long had it been sitting in a non-running state prior to you working on it?

There are no valves, so don't worry about that being your problem.

Have you actually pulled the plug out and then pulled the rope to see if it is actually getting good spark?

If it feels like the engine is not sucking through the carb (and perhaps even getting back pressure), try removing the exhaust pipe and pulling the rope and see if it gets suction then (and/or tries to start). The exhaust pipes on these things can get plugged and cause it not to be able to run. I have had this happen. This would help explain the lack of suction and/or back pressure. Would also explain the fuel problem....

Check those things out and post what you find...

What do you consider to be a reasonable range???

You can add a return easy enough in the plastic tank....Drill a hole, add a nipple, and jb weld it in the hole.....

That's a good idea. It also made me remember that some of the older dirt bikes and enduros used a gas cap that had nipple on them for you to attach a hose for venting. If one of those caps would fit, then you could simply run your return line straight to the top of the cap with no modifications..... I don't know if newer bikes use them, but my Yamaha XT500 cap is that way.....
