Finally got to go desert racing in the new 10Dez.  What a blast.  We only went 36 miles (of 250) before falling to some sort of electrical gremlin, but at least we were able to drive out of the desert under low power and not have to wait for hours to be rescued.

Anyhow, here are a few videos that I pulled from my on-board camera.

Somewhere around mile 5 - maybe?

Downhill area  I wish I had audio from the intercom wired into the camera.  (it's something I can do and plan to do.)  James was extremely worried that we were headed on over the edge and his navigational instructions were hysterical.  They were coming at me like a machine gun.  This is a big file so it's slow to load.  Sorry.

It doesn't look like we're going 90

I saw the guy in my mirror and promptly got right in his way trying to move out of it.

A nice little rough section

Double Jump anyone? - there's meaning behind this comment... James (my navigator) is the only one that will understand.

The beginning of my engine issues.

I have video of the last moment's of the engine running, but for some reason the audio is off (delayed by about 7 seconds) and it's sort of funky to watch.  Once I get that fixed, I'll try to upload more.

The majority of the sound you hear are the body panels rattling.  When I put the car back together after it's tear down I'll be rubber mounting and insulating everything I can.  It's annoying as hell.

Enjoy!

General Discussion / Stadiu Lite Track - actually under way
« on: April 06, 2008, 08:36:40 AM »
I got the track cut in yesterday.   First time on a bulldozer - that thing's fun!  Six way blade makes some interesting gouges.

The track has two longer, fast sections and quite a few switch backs.  The corners are increasing radius, decreasing radius, the dreaded tight 180 and a couple sweepers.  Hopefully the track flows like I was looking for it to.  I'm not sure where jumps, bumps and such are going in yet.

I'm headed back out today to push more dirt around and I think I'm going to take my Gen IV car out and see how it (the layout) feels.  It's sort of hard getting any idea of motion and flow on a machine that goes an amazing 5 mph...

The river that runs through the property is up right now, so I'll probably have to use a mini-excavator to move the car across it.  No way the car would make it right now.  We do plan on building a bridge, so it won't be an issue.  Anyone know where to come across one or two used semi flat bed trailers?

I'll try to get some pix and get them posted later.

This will be the last weekend I get to work on the place for about three - heading out west for a desert race the end of this week.  Hopefully by the time I get home, the river will be down, the rains will have decided to leave and I won't need a web footed horse to get around.  Ah, spring in Ohio - the wonderful world of wet... (sucks!)

For Sale: / Pilot Head Gaskets - adjustable thickness
« on: March 07, 2008, 11:09:06 PM »
I finally got off my butt and got these going.

What I have for the Pilot guys is a new style head gasket for the FL-400 top end.

They are a peel to thickness setup.

The gaskets are .048" thick aluminum, composed of .002" thick layers.

You can peel individual layers off to get to the desired/needed thickness.  This will let you adjust your compression very precisely.  They'll work great for you guys running cut heads.

I used a set of gaskets made from this stuff years ago on a two stroke square four engine (Suzuki RG-500 Gamma).  They worked beautifully.  When I did the gaskets for the Gamma, the material was sent to me and I had it laser cut to the desired shape.  I've been trying to find this stuff for years and finally came across it.  I figured that it would work perfectly for anyone that's building a Pilot engine.

You can use them on stock engines to modify compression too.

They don't need the sealing ring around the bore like you find on a stock or after market gasket like a Cometic.  The aluminum is soft enough that it will seal, yet not so soft that it will blow out.  They were tested up to 185 PSI on an engine that would turn 12K, with far less gasket surface area than you find on a Pilot, and I never had any issues with them.  I had the heads off the Gamma at least a dozen times and was able to reuse them over and over without any problems.

Cool thing is that you can peel them into two .024" pieces (two for one, if you will) and then work from there.  I believe that a stock gasket is .022", but don't hold me to that - it's been a LONG time since I've messed with Pilot stuff.

I'm asking $35.00 a piece.

PM me if you're interested.

General Discussion / New Stadium Lite Track in South West Ohio
« on: January 09, 2008, 11:40:29 AM »
It's official - I'll be building a Stadium Lite track about an hour east of Cincinnati.  The motocross park is called New Vienna - here's the old owner's web page

The track will be located on roughly 7 acres - sort of(?) kidney bean shaped - section four in the pic below.  This is an OLD picture - most of the tracks are gone now.

I hope to head out to the land this weekend and start working on a layout.

My three main goals for the track are:
1) FLOWING.  None of this point, shoot, brake, turn, point, shoot, brake, turn crap.  The track will have slower technical sections as well as long, fast sections.  This is very much personal preference on my part but I enjoy a track that allows you to flow continuously from corner to corner instead of a choppy screwed up type of drive.  And since I'll be operating the dirt moving equipment, it's what I'm going to do!

B) Wide enough for four cars - I'm planning on 35' to 40' wide

III) Multiple lines so there is passing able to be done in the corners, straights and even switch backs. (which usually and obviously develop one line)

I also want to set the track up so that it's multiple level friendly.  There will be table tops through out and there will be doubles in sections where they're able to be done safely.  Different obstacles may be side by side - say a table top on one side of a straight with a double on the other side.

We also want the track to be used by people with UTVs, quads and I'm trying to get some Trophy Karts here too.  The more we can keep four wheeled vehicles off the motocross track the happier everyone will be.  (I HATE quads on a motocross track - they screw up the turns)

Hopefully we'll have the basic layout of the track finished by the end of February. Weather will play a huge roll in this and I'll be out west playing in the Dunes for a couple weeks in the middle of Feb.

I'll keep everyone updated as it goes along.

General Discussion / Possible Stadium Lite Track in South Western Ohio?
« on: November 02, 2007, 08:43:45 PM »
One of our local motocross tracks (New Vienna) is probably being taken over by a guy (Mike Cole) that's been running another local track (Red Barn) for the past couple of years - the land is now being sold by the owner, so Mike's moving on.

I got to take a couple of my Gen IV cars out to Red Barn a few weeks back and Mike got off on the cars - he was all about letting me ride on the track, but unfortunately the owner of Red Barn wasn't and told us we had to leave.

Anyhow, Mike just called me and asked if I'd be interested in helping out by designing and building a track for Stadium Lites and quads (since both types of vehicles tear up the track in a similar fashion - motocross bikes HATE what quads do to a track)

This is preliminary - as he's just starting to look into it, but he asked if I'd put out a post on the web sites I'm familiar with and see what sort of response from the Stadium Lite guys we'd get.

He wants to hold races and offer open practice on the weekends. Race schedule - probably once a month (I'm guessing).

I'm in on this one. I believe he said 7 acres of land for the track. I'll lay out a track that's safe - table tops, not doubles for all the jumps. It will have a high speed area and a more technical area. I've been involved in building more than a couple motocross tracks and understand how to go about building good jumps, safe jumps and laying out a track that FLOWS - none of that go fast, stop, turn, go fast crap.

So I'd like to know how many people would be willing to show up and use the track, show up for races and/or just check the place out.

Thanks.

I think I have some little spirit that sits on my shoulder and lets amazing things happen to me at times.

I call it my Dream Spirit.

The Dream Spirit's been good to me over the years.  It let me chase the dream of stadium racing in 98 & 99

It let me go desert racing in 01 and has continued to be good to me in the dirt world.

This morning it struck again. :worthy:

I'm riding in Pete Sohren's Trophy Truck in the Baja 1000!!!

I head to Phoenix next Saturday, we head down to Old Mexico on Sunday, pre-run Monday and Tuesday and then sit down, strap in, shut up and HAUL on Wed in the TT!!!

The truck is #6 off the line and I'll get to ride from the start to the Bay of LA - about one third the race - 377 miles.  I'll then become pit support or what ever they need.

YEEEEEE   HHHAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

« on: July 17, 2006, 07:20:50 PM »
I'm just passing this on from KiowA's site - Odyknuck gets all the credit, is the contact and the one to work with.  I've done nothing more than steal it from the other site, remove a little bit of stuff and post it here.

There's already a good response - and, as the paragraph below states - this place is KILLER.

==============================================
I am in the process of making arrangements for a Summer/Fall Pilot ride at Hatfield McCoy and need to know who is interested. We need to give them at least a month of lead time to make it happen. I'm thinking July, August, September or October. Listed below are the Hatfield McCoy preplanned dates we can not be on the trails. Lets make a go of it. Those of you that have been there know its the best trail system bar none. One thing to keep in mind is that we will be limited to Pilots, Odysseys, dirt bikes and 4 wheelers. I dont know if home builts will be allowed at this time.
Thanks

General Discussion / Something New and SCORE Legal
« on: July 06, 2006, 09:52:47 PM »
Gee, what can this be?

All chromoly
1.5x.120 wall main tubes
rest is all .095 wall.
Gonna have a Honda 1600 VTEC in it. - makes about 170 hp now, we can make lots more later.  Reliability is the absolute must, though, so 170 for now....
Getting just at 20" of travel on all four corners.
Will have dual vented inboard rear rotors with four piston calipers.
Roberto 8:1 box
930 CVs w/Super Cages - supposed to give 26 degrees of deflection (versus 23 stock) - we set the suspension up to get 25 degrees max
VW Wide 5 bolt pattern and hubs - gives me lots of options for wheels and tires.  Probably gonna run 16" rims and 31's or 33's.  - better ground clearance, plus with a taller tire, more ground clearance and more travel, I'll be able to set the car deeper into the suspension's droop - makes it all work better through the rough stuff.

Got to drive a new gen Taz out in the desert a couple weekends ago and then got to hop back in mine - WOW!!!  Mine's rough...   The new cars are amazingly better.  Smoother, better suspension, handled better, more room - just better. - I guess 5 years of ATV making them better shouldn't surprise me so much.

The new RX1 powerplant's got a lot of potential.  I got it tuned in - sort of. - it runs reliably.  I thrashed it for a hundred miles or so and played with the tuning a bit.  I was more concerned about finding things that break, belt alignment and just making sure it all worked before I started worrying too much about tuning it in.

I'll need to get in a couple hours of seat time doing nothing but straight runs at different throttle and load settings and play with the computer at the end of each run to get it dialed.  It's gonna take a while...

It's a cool setup.

General Discussion / The Dez LIVES!!!!
« on: May 01, 2006, 12:12:39 PM »
It's easier to just copy/paste what I just put up on YDR:

<snip>yesterday (Sunday, 4/30) I finally found some time to get into the shop and start finishing up the Dez. I'd decided that, even though the airbox wasn't finished, it was time to see if the RX1 was going to fire up.
Final stuff was done - lines hose clamped, fluids inserted, wire harnesses checked. All seemed in order. Time to give it a try and see if the engine was going to come to life.

Turn the key, lights on the dash blink, fuel pump starts up and it's time to hit the magic button. The engine cranks over nice and quickly and there's the sound of an engine sort of trying to do something - pop, pop, pop. Little blue flames are coming out of the throttle bodies in no particular order. Hmm...

Unfortunately, I was constrained by time and I had to quit early - plus the battery was on the weak side - it's been sitting for the past four months: time for a charge. I'll try tomorrow.

Last night, laying there in bed it struck me. The engine was firing, but not correctly - as if the spark timing was off a bit. Aha! I know the problem! The RX1 engine is a reverse cylinder setup - the intake is on the front side, the exhaust is on the rear. Bikes are just the opposite. My wire harness for the ignition coils was on backwards! Cylinder 1 on a bike is Cylinder 4 on the sled. TADA!!

This morning I headed down and swapped the plugs around: 1 to 4, 2 to 3. Walked back up to the driver's area, turned the key and hit the magic button.

Here are the results!!! <---- Windblows Media File

The rattling sound you hear at the beginning of the video is a wrench, a pair of pliers and half a dozen Dzus fasteners floating around on the aluminum belly pan. Had me worried at first, but once I picked everything up, well, you hear the results.

The engine revs instantly. The primary clutch isn't installed at the moment, so there's no mass on the crankshaft. Nothing to slow down the rev up or rev down. The engine's also quite lean off the bottom end (why it's sluggish on response and back fires). I'm sure this has multiple factors effecting it. Broken air pressure sensor on the throttle body assembly, no air filters or velocity stacks, non-stock exhaust. I didn't have the Power Commander hooked up yet either, so there's not any way to adjust this out yet. - that's an easy fix, though - two quick plug ins and play with the buttons.

Right now I'm going to get back down to the shop and start working on finishing it up. It's time to get this beastie running and in the dirt again - Summer's on the way and there's a race in Mexico on June 17th. I plan on being there!

General Discussion / Damn 50's will bite you on occasion.
« on: April 27, 2006, 11:10:58 AM »
"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming 'WOW-What a Ride!'"

Seems I live by this pretty well.  Especially the last part.

I'm working on keeping my motto true to heart.

Broke my left wrist in two spots Saturday night - this makes a grand total of 15 broken bones in my 41 short of years wandering around on this planet enjoying myself.

Four of us were playing around on the 50's (set up for road racing right now) and I ended up dorking myself good.

Don't try to grab your buddy's flapping kidney belt (screwing around with him) as you go into a high speed corner.

I think I either pulled myself into him or just plain ran into his back tire - not sure. It happened SO quickly all I know is my front tire suddenly went the wrong way and I high sided.

I grabbed the belt and then saw asphalt, sky, ashpalt.

Road rashed the left side of my back too. Glad I was wearing ALL my gear - could have been a lot worse.

The E.R. X-rays shows two large chunks on the end of the ulna, but nothing under the Quasimodo lump by my thumb that you see in the pic.

Saw an orthopod yesterday.  He showed me the cracks in my radius (reason for the lump) and put me in a funky half plaster/half ace bandage cast until the swelling goes down.  I get a fiberglass unit next Wed.

Not the way to start out the outdoor season!!!

I guess I should stick to Chair Racing instead. - I won!

Here are the E.R. pix.  You can't see the cracks, and can barely see the displaced pieces - scanner won't give me the resolution I need...  rats.

Like the big lump on the bottom (in the pix) arm bone?  that was the last time I broke this wrist...
