Pilot FL400R / FL400R Jetting
« on: March 26, 2007, 10:07:46 PM »
I am a little stumped. I've been running pretty fat. So, I just changed the reeds to boyseen. I used the stock cage and bolted them on. The stock reeds did have a gap between the seat and the reed. Still fat. I dropped the pilot jet from 52 to 50 to 48 and the main from a 140 to a 138. I even moved the needle from the #2 groove to the #1 groove. Making all these changes I can get the snap into the throttle. No problem.

My problem is I can't get the idle to move no matter what jetting I have tried so far. It will barely idle at 700 rpm and won't go up or down when I turn the idle screw. I can screw it all the way in or almost all the way out and no difference. The same with the air screw. No change. I was getting ready to go to the 145 on the pilot screw tonight to see if that would help any but lost the clip on the needle. Have to wait till I get another now.

I thought maybe the float had a hole in it and was sinking. No fluid inside it. I don't have a float guage but I tried using a 6in machinist rule and when it touches the seat it looks to be spot on 16mm.

Any ideas?

Also, my son dropped the needle clip in the gravel and it can't be found. Can I just use a c-clip from a automotive store or do I need to spring for the $18 needle set?

Thanks,
Ed

How about the Progressive shocks. Are they any good and how do they compare to the Works shocks?

Odyssey FL350R / Seat Options for FL350
« on: November 23, 2006, 12:10:25 AM »
There is no room in the Kirkley I have to add any padding on the sides. It fits snug on my hips now. Extra padding on the bottom is an option but I really like the idea if having the seat move with me like on a suspension seat so I don't get that bottoming out effect. Especially since my muscle have atrophied in my gluteus maximus because of the parallysis.

Because I can't stiffen my legs to brace myself, I believe I was getting a small amount of sheering action in the forward/backward motion. Not side to side. Then with the tweed seat cover on the Kirkley it caused the friction and irritated the area.

I do think the suspension seat is my best option. I have no problem making a custom mount.  I already have a design on paper to make it where it will tilt even to make easy access to the oil fill. I just need to find the one seat that will fit the best in the space. I'll keep you posted with what I come up with.

I will call CW and also go look at the ones in Akron.

Did anyone have to do anything special besides make a mount for their suspension seat?

I called ATV Racing and he said the Pilot kit was just a standard Beard Super Seat and he modified the headrest and the tabs. Plus it's a weld in kit. I just want to bolt the seat in without any frame welding.

I called Redart to order a Beard and he said the seat won't fit and ATV Racing did all their modifications to fit the seat in a Pilot.

I measure 14 1/2 inches between the front mounts and 15 3/4 inches between the back mounts on the Pilot so not an issue making a seat mount for any seat I've looked at so far.

The overall length of most seats is 26 inches. Looks to be tight but I think the seat would fit. The Mastercraft site says their seat is 28 inches overall length and I don't see any way to fit that seat in the space.

I am going to Akron Ohio to see a Beard and a Race Trim brand seat on Friday. They said they had them in stock.

Is there something I should know before I make the 2 hr trip? Do I need the ATV Racing seat kit for the suspension seat to fit in a Pilot?

My other option is the Corbeau Baja SS which looks to be 21 inches overall length.

Thanks.

Where do I get one? Repairmanuals.com doesn't have any and that's where I usually get all my manuals.

Thanks.

Odyssey FL350R / FL350 to FL400
« on: October 28, 2006, 09:44:57 PM »
Went and picked up the Pilot yesterday. 16hrs of driving not including the time to make the purchase and stopping to fuel and eat. Left at 10am yesterday and got home at 8am today. I think well worth it though. Very clean and Original owner. Very nice ATV.

Does anyone have an online version or pdf of the 89 Pilot repair manual that I can download until I get a book? Or send it to me? I got a pdf of the FL350 from someone so I was hoping the FL400 might be available also.

Also any picks of their install on a suspension seat in the Pilot? I would like to see what type you bought and what type of custom mounting brackets you built.

Thanks.

Odyssey FL350R / FL350 to FL400

Does anybody have a list or an idea on what parts will interchange with these two bikes?

I just bought a 89 FL400 and am looking at converting it so I can ride it. Once I determine exactly what needs to be modified then I will be selling my FL350 either in parts or as a whole if I can find someone interested in it. I made several modifications so I could ride it because I'm a quadriplegic and don't have grip in my hands. But, it could very easily be put back to the hand controls on the steering wheel like it originally came with.

I just don't want to sell any of the extra parts I have accumulated or any of the parts if I decide to part it out if they will work on my new Pilot.

Thanks,
Ed

Can someone give me a quick overview of the pros and cons or benefits of one type verses the other with the Works shocks remote reservoir, on shock reservoir, and no reservoir. I assume there are the three different types.

Also, I see Randy at Oddy Salvage has some Baja Magnums for sale. How do they compare?

These are for stock replacements on a FL350.

I am mostly a woods/trail rider. Trails we ride are well ridden and have deep ruts. Very bumpy riding.

I just want to make a good purchase the first time as expensive as they are. I need the best suspension I can get being a quadriplegic too!

Thanks.

The BAJA SS suspention seat from Corbeau looks good. They have a dealer here in Columbus too. Think I'll take a look.

I looked at Beard, Racecraft, and Mastercraft web sites too. They all look basically the same.

I have been in a wheelchair for 15 years. I sit on the best seat pad called a Roho which is an air filled pad. I don't want to use this type because it would be easy to puncture with a foreign object such as a small stick or piece of gravel. However, Jay Cushion makes a jell filled cushion with whale fat filling that forms to your butt when sat on and moves with you. I talked with my DME provider and he says no problem to make a seat insert out of this jell for my seat.

I want to trade out my rigid Kirkley for a suspension seat and line the seating are with this jell to sit on for added protection. I'll get the seat in all vinyl to reduce any unnessary friction that might  occur while riding.

Sound good?

I am looking for ideas on a replacement seat for my FL350.

I changed my seat to a Kirkley and 5 point harness. However, during my July 4th ride, I developed an area by my tailbone that caused me to end up having surgery. Being a quadriplegic, I have been unable to work and in bed for the last 2 months healing. I've got another month to go.

This was aggrevated from me "shearing" back in forth in the seat while riding over bumps. Even though I installed the 5 point harness I still have some movement while riding.

Now, how do I solve this so I can ride again without having this problem develop again? I think maybe:

1. replace the cloth/mesh seat cover with a vinel one to lesson the "shearing"

2. add some sort of jell to the bottom of the seat to give it more of a fluid ride in the seat and lessen the vibrations

3. replace the seat again with some sort of suspension seat.

Any ideas?

Odyssey FL350R / We're much better...

Ok we are pretty good now. I don't think it's electrical any more. I think I was just running a little fat.

I raised the needle to the 2nd notch from the top. I left the 145 main in it. I took off the stock air box and added the snorkle hose and air filter it had on it when I first bought it. Air filter is similar to a K&N. I think I will go ahead and buy the K&N to fit the snorkle pipe I have with a couple drycharger covers and just run that in the future. You can see the snorkle pipe on my home page in the frame mod pics.

I also put a BR8ES plug in it. The BR9ES I had in it was pretty wet and fouled.

I took it for a spin around the yard and it was still lacking in the midrange and smoking like it was still running fat in the midrange. Pulled it into the garage and had the kid drop the pilot jet down from a 43 to a 42.

I took it for another spin and it still wasn't responding like it should. Pulled it into the garage and had the kid take the plug out. He said he didn't have the snorkle pipe on good enough and it had disconnected from the carb. Hooked it back up and tightened it down real good this time. Tied it to the cross member this time too. Checked the plug and it was light brown this time and a little wet. Cleaned it off and stuck the plug back in.

I took it for one more spin whith everything hooked up correctly this time and whoaaaa!!! It was wicked fast. Took it down the street and out the yard. Backed it in the garage, put it in forward, and it spun the tires all the way across the garage and out the door. Hit the gravel with rooster tails flying. Kid wasn't to happy. He just swept the garage out today for nothing. He will need to do it again tomorrow now...ha ha ha.

I will do plug chops tomorrow if it isn't raining to make sure we aren't running to lean now. I'll have it ready for the camping trip next weekend. My buddies girl is having her graduation party. Should be a real hoot.

Next...I'll need to tackle that play in the steering. I think I might need to replace the tie rod ends....Never ending story...

Odyssey FL350R / Electrical Experts...I need some pointers

It idles fine. It just acts like it is bogging under load at 1/4 - 3/4 throttle. Smokes a bit more in this range too.  I'm running a BR9ES plug. I'm going to pick up a couple 7's and 8's tomorrow at the Iron Pony. I picked up a couple more ranges of jets tonight so I'll try some plug chops to see if I can dial the flat spots out this weekend. I bought a 42 slow and a 150 main. That gives me a range of slow of 42, 43, 45 and mains of 143, 145, and 150. I have 1 more groove on the needle I can go up if needed also.

I'm thinking of removing the stock air box. It's a bear to try to adjust with using the stock box. Maybe go with the K&N with Outerwear to keep out the water. It had a similar setup on it when I bought it but the filter was a standard cone filter they had on it like you would get from AutoZone or somewhere. I had this great idea of going back to stock with everything when I was putting it back together. I don't know why when I did all the other mods just so I could ride it.

The plug boot looks good on both the old coil and the replacement I put on. I had the guy at the parts desk at Iron Pony look at it too and he agreed with me that the boot probably isn't the problem.
See where I get this weekend and I'll keep you posted.
