Odyssey FL250 / Re: 1979 odyssey no spark at the plug
« on: April 19, 2016, 07:02:30 PM »
Its that time of year, and I'm back to the same friggin problem. Packed it in over the winter, and now I'm at it again, trying to get a spark.
As posted before, this is a brand new Honda coil, not cheap. I figured I'd have less of a chance for a bad part.
This is what I have come up with as of today.
Given the fact that this coil did work flawlessly when I put in in around October, just running the engine for a few minutes, I decided to check all the wires. I ended up replacing the entire harness, front to back. Even got new switches. The result....no spark.
Now I attacked the coil with my meter. The manual says to check for continuity between the spark plug wire and the primary coil wire,, between the primary coil wire and ground, and between the plug wire and ground.
I only get continuity between the primary wire and ground. NOTHING when the plug wire is in the mix. Odd thing, I get no continuity ANYWHERE on the plug wire......from the cap to ground.....cap removed and from the end of the wire to ground.....even nothing through just the cap it self!
In short...every test the manual has to determine the coil is bad says it is...but its frigging brand new!....WTF am I missing!!!!
Is there a better aftermarket coil to try? Can a factory coil be so defective to have THAT many open circuits???
This has been going on since last August!
Help me someone....

Odyssey FL250 / Any trick to getting gas?
« on: August 12, 2014, 07:46:58 PM »
Finished the refurbishment, finally. Had an issue with the spark, but new points and more time spent adjusting timing fixed that. My problem is now I'm not getting gas through the system. Since everything is new, new fuel valve, new pump, hoses, the tee, and the carb was rebuild by a pro shop, I know its gonna take som vacuum, either my getting it to turn over, or by me pulling the starter for a while to get the gas through.
Thing is, I pulled that sucker hundreds of times, and all I got so far is fuel to the filter ( about 1 inch from the valve), and I dont have ANY on the next section going up to the pump.
Is there something I'm missing, or is it just me having to endure the pulling some more?

Odyssey FL250 / wiring question
« on: July 19, 2014, 03:36:59 PM »
I cannot seem to post a picture of the basic electrical wiring diagram for a 1798 FL250. If anyone can look at one for me and answer this question, it would be a real help.
I am removing the headlight wiring, and am wondering what I do with the yellow wire coming from the crank case. I isolated it, AND I grounded it, and am wondering it  this might have anything to do with me getting no spark, when it was getting a spark no problem four months ago when I started the restore of the machine. VERY FRUSTRATING.
Also, does the kill switch work by completing the circuit to ground, or by REMOVING the grounding?

Odyssey FL250 / 12V supply
« on: March 19, 2014, 09:30:42 PM »
This has been beaten to death here about changing an early year point ignition to a later year CDI. I've been looking, and I can find all the parts except for a flywheel...and they aint cheap.
One post her had some one suggest running a small alternator from a pulley off the rear axle. My question is: even a small motorcycle alternator, say a 40 amp one...will that put a noticeable drag on the power?
This would be strictly for 12V led driving lights. Where we ride ( NJ Pine Barrens) at night you cant even see you finger touching your nose, its that dark.

So I could in effect temporarily remove the drive belt, and thus be able to push it with more ease?

Odyssey FL250 / Really stupid question
« on: March 01, 2014, 03:45:43 PM »
I've been riding two strokes my whole like, but always bikes.
The FL250 we just picked up is what I have a question about. I know it has a centrifugal clutch, like my first mini bike in the early 70's. With the mini bike, motor off, I would walk it to where ever, and you could hear the whole mess of moving parts make noise, but I could still push it. With the FL250, it take MASSIVE force to push it.
Neither brake is locked up, and I don't know what else to look at.
Any ideas?

Alright. Got the parking brake unstuck. Quick question: I noticed on the rear wheel one of the 8 x 38mm stud bolt was missing and was replaced with a smaller bolt and nut/washer. Small enough that it did not screw up the threads in the hub. I am having trouble locating the Honda replacement parts. I was wondering...cant I just get a 8 x 40mm bolt ( McMaster Carr) and thread it from the rear. This is basically what the PO did, and it could have been like this for 25 years. And at least I'd have the added strength of the thread. AND the original had a nut in the rear as well, so it was essentially a bolt itself.
does anyone see a problem with this?
Thanks in advance

Thanks...when it gets above freezing, I'll check the brake. Good news is, the compression test passed right on the money!

Hey,
Just picked up a 78 FL250. Great original shape, even the seat is still somewhat intact. My first plan of attack is a compression test. It did run when we picked it up, so its not dead. If the compression is good, then 'm moving on to the roll cage. I have a welder who will take off some bent bars a PO put on it, and then weld new tubes where I need.
You might think this plan is backward, considering a carb cleaning and the like would be more important. It is, but its too effing cold to ride, so some of the cosmetic stuff is going first.
My one question today: The parking brake froze up. It was fine yesterday. Is it a matter of opening everything up to clean and lube, or should I be looking for something else.
  One thing at a time.
Thanks in advance. I'll will be leaning on you guys a lot, so I apologize if some questions are stupid. I will of course do a search first.
Andy
