89 pilot gas cap problem
« on: May 16, 2011, 08:13:06 PM »

My gas cap on my 89 pilot leaks.  The rubber seal looks like new.  It doesnt just vent a little.  You can smell it 15 feet away very strong.  Do you know of any way to fix this problem?

Look at the top of the tank where the cap seals...Is it damaged/bent?

89 pilot gas cap problem

No I put a streight edge on the tank and it is fine.  The gasket looks almost brand new.  And the little rubber flap seal around the keyhole looks great.  I heard it is only supossed to vent out the keyhole but when I spray carb cleaner in the bottom center hole it comes out the side of the inner gasket inside the edge of the cap.  Is it supposed to do that?  I am confused.  I smell gas very strong and am concerned as my heaters are in my garage.  I put a nitrile glove aroud the gas cap and pushed it on the tank.  Then tied a not in it over the top and it seames to help for now but I would like a permanent fix.  Any ideas?  Thanks

If i'm not mistaken,it should be a 1 way vent in the cap...Letting air in,but not out....Try soaking it in a cup of carb cleaner overnight and see if it helps....Also,fill it up with gas,and stand it on it's rear end and see if gas comes out of the cap...If it does, the vent is messed up....
