1990 FL400R - worth restoring?
« on: February 19, 2011, 07:53:25 AM »
I've had my pilot for a few years now, and don't think I use it enough.  I'm looking for a bit of input as to whether it's worth restoring, or just selling as is - how's the sales market looking?

It's an interesting one, having been used for corporate its whole life prior to me - the throttle had been blocked to a max of about 2/3 open!

As a result, it's still on its original bore (which is rare).  I've just done a full top-end rebuild (new rings, piston, bearing, gaskets etc), new belt, repaired exhaust (as new).  It's just about run in after that (2-3 hours use, I estimate).

Long story short, mechanically it is now in perfect shape (except for thermostat, but I've wired a fan in on a switch.  Perfectly reversible, no damage done to the machine).  However, aesthetically, it's pretty weak.  I would actually say tatty.

I'm just a big conflicted, as I love it, but if it's worth over ?2k or so, then I'd probably have to let it go - as it needs a full respray ideally.

Does anyone have any experience of repainting a chassis and wheels - costs, time taken etc?  I can strip and reassemble myself, but it would need sandblasting, and some dents taking out.

Are there any specialists in the UK?

Thanks guys, I know it's a bit of a ramble, and it sounds stupid but I really am quite attached to it, having wanted once since I tried one aged about 10!  I just can't afford to spend the money I suspet is required to bring it to mint condition.

Hi pilotpete, sorry it took so long to respond.  I've actually found a place that will powdercoat the chassis, wheels, suspension and sheering wheel for c.?300, so I think I'll go for it.

With a rebuilt engine too, that's gotta be worth ?3.5-?4k?

The question is now whether I go for a full nut and bolt restoration while I'm at it, and just how much I'll end up spending.

I'll keep pictures and do a write up if anyone is interested?  I plan to strip it down at Easter time.

Well, I sort of started the restoration...new works G-series rear shocks, full front arm rebuild (shocks to come at a later date when I have more money!) and I repainted the front wheels in white.

I'm sure I'll eventually get around to painting the rear wheels and suspension arms too...but let's not get too ambitious.  I might get them powdercoated instead, but I have a limited budget, and prioritise mechanical repairs.

The difference in the ride with these new shocks and bushes is incredible.  The thing is so much more planted and predictable - it's a new machine.  I'm so happy!

As an aside, the parts came from Curtis over at http://www.pilotodysseyperformance.com/ - he is an absolute gentleman, and I can't recommend the company enough.

I'm back in love with the Pilot!

The next problem, however, is that somehow the top bolt on the floating rear caliper has disappeared , if it was ever there.  Does anyone know what size this is, and from where I can get a replacement?

Thanks, Ollie
