shifted fine until.....
« on: December 07, 2010, 02:34:38 PM »
hello all,
i am asking for advice to my problem. I purchased a 85 FL350 and it was running and shifting good until i replaced the drive belt with a correct part number dayco according to the website. now it will not shift either F or R without out a hard clunk or grinding? the belt seems to be too tight, as it will move both pulleys when moving belt by hand without motor running
thanks

Grinding and clunking are common problems with the 350...Lowering the idle as low as possible without it dieing will help a bunch.....Some folks have even disabled the safety device that keeps it from starting in gear....Doing this lets you put it in gear before starting the engine....You may want to make sure your clutch is opening up all the way too,but I doubt that is the problem.....
Even with the idle low,it will still have the tendency to grind some...Practice jamming it in gear quickly....Once you get the hang of it,it will become easy to do.....
