im having problems engaging the fwd and reverse with out reving the motor and making sound like the teeth are out of sink. the manual isnt much help any ideas would are much needed.  1990 fl400 is the machine

That's pretty common...I have to rev it up a little myself sometimes to get it to drop in gear....You will eventually get the hang of doing it without over reving and causing grinding or a clunk when it falls in gear...You get the same result from rocking the buggy a little as well, just hard to do when you're strapped in...

heard something about it being cause by a burr on one of the gears after 25 years or wear. This burr can be ground off but requires opening up the trans case which is not a bad idea after 25 years of wear anyway.
