Got an fl350 with no engine, what to do? easy swaps?
« on: February 28, 2009, 07:20:02 PM »
so just picked it up and it's rough and without an engine.  It came with an old rotax 400, but not sure if i should mess with this might work engine or look for a stock engine or easy cheap conversion? anyone know of a good easy conversion, nothing crazy because i don't want to be going thru trannys, would like a reliable machine in the end. anyone got an extra stock motor from there conversion? any info would help
thanks
brian

You are in luck.....

There are several guys here that have grafted engines into the 350.  FL670R and I know Pilothawk is putting a Phazer motor into his pilot.

As far as reliability, ask FL670R.  He has built one bad Ody with a sled motor.

The guys here are very helpful and can help with your conversion if you choose to go that route.

I prefer the stock engine but modified to keep cool.  But it is relatively stock looking and you don't have to fabricate alot of parts.  In the end it is more expensive and you will have less power than you would with a sled engine if you had to buy a stock motor and rebuild it.

What happend with the stock engine????

I hope this helps with your decision.

not sure, the guy i got it from bought it like this and made a mount for the rotax but the exhaust comes out at the back of the seat and he never finished it, the buggy has been sitting out in the weather and really needs gone through.  Don't know if that old rotax is worth messing with if i'm gonna spend buku buck getting the chassis fixed up, i want a reliable machine that i can get parts for easily, i've heard about the 440 sleds being used but can't find any info about what ones work best are they all the same i've seen 440 sleds from the 70's to late models all different brands, whats the best choice?  I can pick these up relitivly cheap here in indiana.  Project is starting to look expensive and I work for myself and business sucks right now, I might even abandon ship or just try to get that old rotax on there and get ab exhaust made, but the chassis probably needs addressed first?  Just looking into my options, thing is this is my dream toy never had one and hate to abandon ship?

You might have gotten the machine "cheap", but not to discourage you, very little about these things is inexpensive. Unless you can spend 500-2000 on it to make it a reliable runner, your best bet is to part what you have out and look for a cleaner machine that needs less work.

i'm south of indianapolis but got the buggy outside of louisville, just picked up a wrecked buggy in florida(luckly my dad lives down there) it's got everything i need just has a bent frame.  cant wait to go get it and do some fishing while i'm there, but it might be a couple months before i get to it.
