FL 250 Bogging
« on: December 19, 2008, 12:27:26 AM »
Whats up everyone, new to the forums, just picked up an 83 fl250 for 300. Didn't run but I got it going cleaned carb, gas tank, replaced all fuel lines, rebuilt fuel pump. Has good spark, fuel pump working good, compression is at 120 while pull starting 150 at idle. I'm running 32:1 mix.  Idles fine and starts right up but when I give it throttle it bogs and won't reach high rpms. I did notice some oil dripping out exhaust any ideas?

Make sure that you have cleaned the filter, and that it isn't over oiled. Try running it without the airbox lid and see if that makes any difference. If it does then your machine is running too rich.

Another possibility is that there is an obstruction of some kind in the exhaust pipe. Mice are notorious for building nests in pipes.

Welcome to the land of odysseys. Let us know what you find out.

I took the air cleaner off and had the same results. I just got a new plug and that changed nothing. I'm going to play with the jet and see what happens.

Do you have the manual? If not you can download one here.

I have the manual thanks.. After playing with the carb settings yesterday I have no change in the way its running. I duct taped the intake up just to be sure there was no leaks, at this point I am going to tear down the carb again, seems to me its the only thing it could be now.

Once you get the carb apart pay particular attention to the pilot jet. The tiny openings in that thing can get clogged easily. Also make note of what the current jetting is and let me know. Typically a stock machine will run best with a 128 main with the needle clip in the middle or 2nd notch from the top.

I'm also curious as to how you check compression while idling. I know there are 2 oles in the head, from the factory the one on the clutch side of the engine is supposed to have a plug in it (Not a spark plug, but a block off plug that looks more like a bolt).

Good luck and I hope you figure something out.

I think I found the problem. Exhaust spark arrestor portion of pipe had a major build up of carbon. I briefly ran it with no pipe and it seems to run like it should.

PilotHawK- the head does have 2 spark plugs in it, guy I got it from said he didn't know why. I put my compression gauge in the spare hole and checked it at idle that way.
