wanted pilot mag/ flywheel
« on: February 14, 2007, 03:42:20 AM »
Has anyone got a flywheel for a pilot to sell to me the magnets have fell off mine and there is no charging. I could also do with a puller for the flywheel and a puller for the drive clutch.
I can pay by pay pal, would need a price including air mail to united kingdom.

Flywheel Puller Tool
« Reply #1 on: February 14, 2007, 11:14:20 AM »
Ludedude sells a flywheel puller at his 45 parallel store.  However do not use this tool.  It is improperly designed and will split the end of your crankshaft.  I know because it happened to me.  I sent him a message concerning this but to date he has not issued a warning against using this tool.

If I remember correctly, the magnets are imbedded in the flywheel and cannot "fall off".  Post a picture showing the problem.  I think you know a new flywheel is very expensive.

Easy there Jimmie,

I sent you an email reply and never heard back from you. I offered to pay to repair the crank that was damaged and stated that I have used mine at least a dozen times now with no problems. So because you had one instance of trouble and I have had none, I'm supposed to post some world wide warning?  :?

No worries anyhow, I have no more of them, only mine left that will be sold when the last pilot engine is sold, and if it would please you I'll state that one person has had one instance of damaging a crank end while using a similiar tool.  :P

Again, sorry you had issues, I've had none.

Hey Brian,

I never received the email reply.  The registered email here is probably no good.  I'll have to update it.

The tool has a couple of problems in my opinion:
1. The push bolt's end is pointed at too much angle.  This causes it to act like a wedge to the hole in the end of the shaft.  On other flywheel puller bolts I've seen the end is in fact flact with a bump in the middle to act as a centering guide.  After I ground the push bolt end flat, I was able to get enough pulling force to remove the pulley.  Of course this was after the shaft's end mushroomed and had to be cut off.
2. The tool has not been hardened.  Similar commercially available flywheel removal tools are hardened.  I was amazed at the amount of torque it took to remove the flywheel.  The threads on the body and push bolt were distorted after use.  I purchased the highest-grade bolt I could find to replace the push bolt since I had borrowed this tool.  I think it was equivalent to an SAE grade 8.  The new bolt ran tight into the tool body but was still usable.

This tool was new when I borrowed it so it was in good operating condition.  Maybe my flywheel was on unusually tight.  There wasn't any sign of corrosion though.

I appreciate anyone who creates tools and products for these vintage machines.  However, I think you missed a couple of key design elements when you created this tool.  This is typical with prototyping anything.  I know everything I've ever built had room for improvement.  I'm curious, how many did you sell?

Jimmy

Think I had 3 sets made, never got anymore interest, so I never had anymore made. I didn't design it, but I didn't pick up on the points you listed either, just showed the machinist the pictures, gave him the parts, told him what it was supposed to do, and he made them ;) Now that I have my own center I'd make my own, and I wrongly assumed he used grade 8 bolts for the push rod. Again, my apologies. Wish you had of updated your email, I would have sent you the rebuilt crank I just auctioned off a couple weeks ago. Wait...you sent me an email didn't you? I replied to that email address...you should have gotten it then....maybe I did it via here I don't remember anymore

Only three!  Not much of an issue then.  The one I had belonged to Rocketman.  I think Throttle bought one from you at some point or maybe it was just the case puller.  I just didn't want someone else having the same problem.  On the up side the case puller worked excellent.  I ended up getting a new crank from Livewire.  I finally got to run it last weekend at Durhamtown Plantation in Georgia.  It ran great.  Compression was right on spec at 148 psi.  Only issue I had was the  exhaust pipe broke in half right below the engine exhaust port.  Loudest noise I have ever heard in my life!  Fortunately we had another and I was back up in no time.

Sorry about hi-jacking this thread.  Lee I hope you get your Pilot fixed.

LOL, yeah, I don't push sales, just try to offer any savings I find/can get and pass them on. The store is setup and there, if I get some sales I do, if not, then not. Glad you're up and running again

Ludedude, Do you have any of these parts I am looking for?
What I can not understand is with no magnets on the magneto it can not create any power for the spark, but it does run. The battery is not getting charged by the generator so where is the power coming from :?

Are you sure it's the magnets that have come off?  :?  I had one go bad and what came off was some sort of liner.

Sorry, I don't have any flywheels, I did call Hillside and you can still get the flywheels and stators (separately, kit with both is no longer available).

I have a flywheel puller (see posts above ;)), and a puller for the clutch as well (stock clutch or Power Bloc?). PM if you want them.

I'm going to post a list of other parts I know I have that I'll be eBaying soon as well, so look there if there's anything else you need.
