I have recently finished rebuilding my fl250 but when i went to try to start it it had way to much compression. I have replaced every bearing in the engine and have put in a new oem piston. I have tried to put two head gaskets on but that did not make it any better. Once when I sat there pulling on it for while with the compression release that i added on on and it got easier to pull without the release but it needed a new carb. When i installed the new carb it seemed to get even harder to pull. Does anyone have any idea what would make it so hard to pull?

What is the compression in PSI? The FL250 has a small pull rope spool. That does not give you much leverage. An FL350 is actually easier to pull over because the starter rope spool is larger.

I made an aluminum spacer for the engine and i was able to start it. Before it started it seemed to backfire and a lot of smoke came out of the bottom head gasket there was gas on the engine case. I took it apart and added some gasket maker to the gasket and put it back together. I started it and rode it around but it had very little power i probably need to adjust the carb but i rode it and the i couldn't get up a very small slope and had to push it back. I noticed that oil was on the case again.

If you space the cylinder up, it will:
1. Lower compression and reduce power
2. Alter the port timing, possibly resulting in things like back fires
