Top end rebuild
« on: December 24, 2013, 05:14:05 AM »
I just bought a fl 350.  Took it out for the first time and it ran great for about 15 mins. Then it just gave out. I did a compression test and it did not give me a reading. Is that telling me that it needs a top end rebuild? If so, what's the proses. New head gaskets and replace the piston. I need some help.

It sure sounds like top end time. You can try pulling off the expansion chamber and looking up at the piston to see if it's worn. If the top end does need refreshing, you'll need a head and base gasket, as well at least a set of rings. Most likely a piston, wrist pin and retainers, as well as cylinder work.
The usual 'my two cents' disclaimer applies. :)

With no compression reading, I am betting on a hole in the top of the piston... Even a worn top end should give some compression reading... You either ran it too lean melting the crown, or was using old gas and detonated a hole in it....
