backfire trying to start the first time

ok well this is my first odyssey and i just got done reassembling the whole thing but i did not take the motor apart it was more a repaint and cosmetic overhaul so now it is back together and i am trying to start it and it seems to just backfire through the carb any ideas what i need to do
i know very little about 2 stroke engines

Do you have a manual? If not, that's the place to start, I think PilotHawk has links (PilotSniper too?) to online versions.

We'll need to know what year you're working on too (points or CDI).
