Title: Cant find New Tie Rod kits anywhere
Post by: kifferznew on September 27, 2012, 08:46:35 AM
Hello all,

I hit a large rock and broke my right tie rod. I need to replace both of them anyway but cannot find new ones anywhere.

Aftershock says they have steel ones but they are not listed then the heavy duty Aluminum ones are sold out. Any other place only carries the ends. Any advice or pointers in the right direction would be appreciated on where to fine something like these..

Thank you!

They ran out yesterday. More are already on their way.

Cool...

Steel and Aluminum or just the Aluminum ones?

They haven't been steel in a while, where do you see a reference to them being steel? The aluminum rod ends are still stronger than stock and stronger than the ends. So if you hit something, the 7/16 rod ends will bend and you can just replace that instead of the more expensive rod.

I will go with aluminum when available but in the add for the aluminum ones its says "These are made of thicker aluminum tubes than our heavy duty steel tie rods."  This gave me the impression that you carry steel ones.

Yeah, I have a tendency to speak/type as if people have been into this stuff as long as me and are familiar with older items.

The comment was there because when we first switched to aluminum, people thought the steel ones were stronger.

I use 3/4 inch stress resistant steel...have a local machine shop spin them for me.  They will flex instead of bending and with the way we designed in a taper, the bend point is moved way out to the end of the tie-rod so if for some reason you hit something hard enough to bend one, the bend is out on the end and doesn't turn the tie-rod into a horse shoe...you probably will not even know you bent it until you go to spin it out and you notice a small wobble in the turn...The one bad, you have to powder coat them or they will rust quickly...and they are not light weight...I figure the front end is too light anyway on the Pilot so it helps putting weight low and forward...

For ends, I have used stock Honda EX400 ends...cheap, readily available at any Honda shop...I have yet to have one fail on me and I have abused/tested the limits of tie-rods/ends more than most...

Aluminum is nice...light, strong and doesn't rust...LW can tell you all about them...so you do have options if you have a machine shop available...
