Title: crank rebuild
Post by: needforspeed on June 27, 2012, 09:45:02 PM
Hopefully one of you guys can help me out here. I have to replace my crank seals on the fl 250. I am used to rebuilding snowmobile engines which are twins (two cylinders). With the twins to rebuild the crank it has to go to a shop that has a press to get the parts in the right spots. My question is, with a single piston, are the bearings easy to replace? If I have the engine tore down to replace crank seals I want to rebuild the crank as well. So that is my question. Should I bring the crank to a shop for rebuild? I can reassemble the cases and all that jazz I just want to make sure everything is perfect before I reassemble. I am trying to figure everything out before teardown.

Yes...Take it to a shop that rebuilds cranks....The pressing part is fairly straight forward, but the trueing part can be really tricky....I have practiced a few times with an old crank I have, and without a jig, it's not easy getting the runout correct....If it's not right, your new crank bearings won't last long....
