Title: Cheapest replacement shocks
Post by: breezer on July 30, 2011, 02:41:58 PM
Okay, so one of my rear shocks is leaking badly, the other isn't much better.  The fronts are also a bit old.

As far as I know, they're just the standard Honda ones (the rears have remote reservoirs, fronts don't).

What're the cheapest replacements?  Do I still need remote reservoirs for casual (non-competition) trail use, or can I replace with Works shocks that don't have remote reservoirs?  I don't need it to be perfect/competitive, and only use it like 10 times a year.

I looked on P. O. Performance, and found the works shocks, but they're v. expensive.

Also, what does "threaded preload" mean?  I could save $90 by not having that, but don't know what it is! :)

Thanks!

Works are definately the best option....As for reservoirs, you can definitely do without them.....I have actually only ran them once....The shock oil does get hot,but according to suspension experts, the worse case scenario for shock fade due to heat is only a 10% fade and will probably ever be noticed...
Threaded pre load means the shock body is threaded with a large nut on it allowing for the ride height of the machine to be adjusted by tightening/loosening the nut..... This raises/lowers the upper spring rest adding pressure to the spring and raiseing the machine...It really isn't necessary either since the works shocks have a snap ring that does the same thing, just a little harder to do... Once I got mine set where I liked it, I havnt moved it since.....

Hoodlum, note that the rear shocks on your machine are not the same as the ones he linked to. It says triple rate which is the standard Works build for an FL400.

Thanks guys. I took your advice, and also spoke to Curtis at pilotodyssey and went for works G series (no remotes) for the rear.  They have the pre-load as standard.

The fronts aren't as bad yet, so I'm going to take them to a local chap who rebuilds obscure racing car shocks, to see if he can rebuild them.  If not, I'll probably wait until spring to buy new fronts.
