Title: FL250 with Rotax 583
Post by: arcticemerald on April 26, 2011, 01:27:39 AM
I am building a homemade go kart that has a Rotax 583 engine and an FL250 rear axle and transmission. I am wondering what the best way to run a belt from the 583 to the transmission would be. The 583 takes a 1 3/8" belt while the FL250 secondary is 31/32" I think. I am not sure whether it would be best to try to change the clutch on the engine or change the secondary. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well,I wouldn't waiste too much time and money on it...That 250 tranny will not handle the power of the 583....

Ok thanks for the concern. Any ideas how the belt problem can be fixed? I am just trying to get it to work. If the transmission breaks, then I will have to do something else.

Shim the driven, but that will only work if the angle of the faces are the same on the drive and driven which is doubtful......If they aren't,it will eat belts....Only other way would be to have another clutch modified to fit the engine,or have a shaft made so the driven from the 583 will fit on the oddy tranny......
Why don't you just bypass the oddy tranny and direct drive it? It would be much easier than what you are attempting.....
FYI,the tranny will break,no if to it.....If you were talking about a $50 mod to work, then I would say try it,but you are probably looking at a modification that could easily cost as much as the oddy is worth when dealing with clutches....

Ok thanks. What would you suggest for running it directly? I have an fl250 axle as well and I would need some way to gear it down or else it will have far too much speed.

You would need a driven off of the 583,but instead of going through the tranny,it would be connected to a chain and sprockets...Cangeing sprocket size will give limitless gearing.......

Great. I will plan to do this then. In the meantime, how would I shim the drive clutch? I know little about clutches and how to adjust them. I know how they work, but am not quite sure what you mean by shim.

Do you know what kind of clutch you have on it? Can you post a pic of it?

I got a buddy that has a 500 polaris mustang, he found a belt in between the oddy belt size, and the polaris belt size. suprisingly it doesnt eat belts, maby you could try that.
