NEED HELP,PLEASE! 78 odyssey fuel problems?
« on: April 16, 2014, 09:23:35 AM »
ive got a 78 odyssey that the motor was just rebuilt on. the gas tank was to far gone to reuse so I put an aluminum spun tank on it (so its gravity fed). my fuel lines run from tank to shut off valve to filter to fuel pump then to crank case to the check valve & carb and back to tank. I put fuel in the tank & with the spark plug out pulled it till the lines were full of fuel then poured a little (just a dash) of straight gas in spark plug hole then put plug back in a pulled & nothing. ive got spark. but then after pulling a few times fuel was running out of the bottom of the case so I pulled the 2 lines from carb that run into case & fuel was coming out both lines.......I need help! I wanna get this thing running.

then to crank case to the check valve & carb and back to tank.
Did you put the tee in the line to the crank case? If so, fuel would be sucked direct into crank case causing the exact issue you described. The T should be in the line to the carb, with larger leg to tank. The crank case line should be directly connected to the fuel pump connection that does not have an arrow on it.

Thank you for replying! I'm pretty sure I have the T correct, I did it like the book showed (big end to fuel pump then the Y (on the big end) to carb & little  side  back to tank). My float valve needle was in upside down, there causing a the fuel to run out of carb, fixed that no more fuel leaks but it still wont fire! I've got spark, got compression (125psi) I can see fuel going through the lines to carb. I've even poured a little gas (straight) into the cylinder & still nothing (I know that's bad but I was just trying anything even used a little starting fluid & nothing......would the piston being in backwards cause any of this? Thank you for your input, man I need I'm getting so stressed over this thing. Also could a clogged exhaust do this? When I bought this it had been sitting in a barn for 30 + years. I took spark arrestor out & cleaned it.....

If putting gas in the plug hole, it should be mixed. Starter fluid can ignite in the crank case of a two stroke and destroy the engine. The fatter end of the tee goes to the tank. How and why would the piston be in backward? That would likely cause the rings to snag the exhaust port and destroy the engine.

The piston is correct way. By "fatter side of the T goes to the tank" are you talking about the side with the Y or the single end (on the other side of bulge)? & thanks for the reply. I need all the help I can get! This thing has me baffled!!!!

The bulge goes toward the tank. There is a ball and spring in there. When the inlet valve in the carb closes, the pressure compresses the spring and the fuel flows back to the tank.
